This 213-room Hampton Inn
& Suites doesn’t have much personality, but it’s a solid mid-range choice with
plenty of free perks. Highlights include
an outdoor pool, free breakfast buffet, and a 24-hour shuttle to Old Town
Alexandria and the D.C. subway system. The hotel’s biggest downfall is its
surrounding neighborhood, which is uninspiring and not pedestrian-friendly (and definitely
not in the Old Town -- despite what its name implies). For a better
neighborhood, consider the similarly priced Hilton Garden Inn Alexandria Old
Town.
Scene
Generic Hampton Inn with nice perks and reasonable prices
The Hampton Inn & Suites
Alexandria Old Town is a large, generic chain hotel on the side of a sprawling highway.
That being said, this property is especially comfortable and affordable as far
as D.C.-area hotels go. The rooms are a good size, breakfast and parking are free (a rarity for D.C.), and all the amenities are there: an outdoor pool,
business center, fitness center, and convenience store. For guests who don’t
mind the extra travel time, this is a great place to park your car and explore
D.C. using the hotel’s free shuttle to the subway, and many tourist groups stay
here for this very reason. Nearby Old Town Alexandria is also a worthwhile
destination for shopping, dining, and admiring 18th- and 19th-century
architecture. Style-wise, parts of the hotel are a
bit dated. The lobby features hardwood floors, fake plants, beige walls, and
lime green and brown patterned carpeting that shoots for contemporary coolness
but falls short. The brown and lime patterned seating is a bit
drab, but looks comfortable nonetheless. The decor looks more seamless in the
large breakfast area, which has large green pendant lights, floor-to-ceiling
glass windows, and orange sofa seats.
Location
On busy Route 1, two miles from Old Town Alexandria and 20 minutes from D.C.
This Hampton Inn is located
right on U.S. Route 1, a busy eight-lane highway frequented by Virginia commuters
heading in and out of D.C. There’s not much in the immediate area besides car
dealerships, a steak restaurant, and a golf course. The charming Old Town
neighborhood is less than 10 minutes away by car or hotel shuttle, and the
National Mall is a 20-minute drive. - Five-minute drive to TangerOutlet Mall
Rooms
Bland rooms and suites with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers
Nothing distinguishes these rooms from any other
Hampton Inn, though they are spacious and almost all are modern (a few still have dated '90s
style furnishings). They have comfy beds and decor in shades of lime
green and beige, with dark wooden furniture. Guests can choose between standard rooms or Studio Suites, both with the option of one king or two queen beds. Every Studio Suite and King Room includes a full-size sofa bed. Each unit features free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen
TV, microwave, mini-fridge, and coffeemaker. Some back-facing rooms have views
of the neighboring golf course.
Features
Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, outdoor pool, convenience store, and gym
There is no restaurant
or bar, but the free buffet breakfast offers lots of hot and cold options,
including a waffle-making station and Krispy Kreme donuts. The hotel has a seasonal
outdoor pool with a shower area, 24-hour business center, and a modest 24-hour
fitness center with modern cardio equipment and free weights. A free shuttle runs
24 hours a day to Old Town Alexandria and the Huntington Metro (Yellow Line). The
hotel also has a guest laundry room and a 24-hour convenience store selling
snacks and necessities. Outdoor parking and Wi-Fi access in rooms and
throughout the hotel are free.
