Bottom Line

Following the
signature model of the Dutch chain, this upper-middle-range citizenM hotel is a chic,
design-smart, and unerringly cool hotel set in the north side of central
Glasgow. The location means easy access on foot to both plentiful transport
links and most of the city's attractions. Interiors are inviting and hip, with
plenty of space to lounge and soak up the funky surrounds. Rooms, however,
approach pod-like in space with beds accessible from only one side -- though
amenities are suitably high-tech. If room size isn't an issue, rates are very
reasonable, although more space for your dime can be found at the Holiday Inn
Glasgow City Centre Theatreland nearby.

Scene

Hip, urban-chic chain hotel with spacious lounges

Self-anointed as
city's coolest hotel, this Glasgow outpost of the Dutch citizenM hotel chain is
certainly up there with the hippest. Housed in a black, boxy, and almost
sinister-looking corner building, first impressions can be forbidding, however
once inside the vibe is breezy, fun, and indeed undeniably cool. An efficient
and high-tech self check-in reception area leads to a chic and spacious lobby
lounge full of sharp 21st-century design and arty knickknacks. A spiral
staircase also leads to the first-floor lounge, another open-plan space
providing genuinely relaxed and inviting atmosphere for guests to chill out on
comfy seating surrounded by numerous funky flourishes. Despite all its sleek
contemporary trappings, staff are attentive and friendly while guests tend
towards younger couples and Millennial business travelers.

Location

Set on busy junction in central Glasgow's Theatreland district

The hotel overlooks
a busy junction in the Theatreland district in the center of Glasgow. As well
as being surrounded by most of the city's theaters, Glasgow's main shopping hub
of Buchanan Street, home to lots of high-end shops, restaurants, and bars, is also just five minutes on foot. Local transport links also include the Buchanan Street subway
and Queen Street station (a five-minute walk away), and it's a 10-minute
walk from two of Glasgow's main train stations -- Charing Cross and Central. The
hotel is also well positioned for access to Glasgow Caledonian University, just a
couple minutes on foot.

Rooms

Impressive tech and large comfy beds -- though tiny rooms

The hotel has 198
rooms, all of which are finished in minimalist contemporary styling with white
walls and simple modern design furnishings. At just 150 square feet they are
small by any standards, though what space there is is used efficiently and
wall-to-wall windows provide plenty of natural light. Amenities are also
impressive, with bedside mini iPads used to control mood lighting, music, and
free movies on the large flat-screen TVs. Beds are also king-sized with quality
bedclothes, though lack space around the bed might be problematic for couples.
Bathrooms are also tiny with rainfall showers and basins have been placed in
the sleeping area.

Features

Canteen-style dining with barista-brewed coffee and late-night bar

The hotel's main
highlights are its public areas, especially designed actually be used as spaces
to hang out and relax, with free use of iMacs and a TV lounge. The 24-hour CanteenM
also provides chic and spacious surrounds serving a range of breakfast options
in the morning with barista-brewed coffee (not included in the rate). At lunch
and evening it becomes a diner offering sushi and sandwiches -- canteen style
-- while the bar section serves draught beer and cocktails until late. The
hotel also has a screening room for watching movies, though no health or
fitness facilities on-site. Wi-Fi is free of charge throughout the property.
