Located on a quiet residential street
Cozy rooms with homelike feel
Bed-and-breakfast rates include full English breakfast
Pub on the ground floor with outdoor seating (and sometimes live music)
Free Wi-Fi throughout
Free on-site parking
Rooms have tiny bathrooms
Far away from most Southampton attractions
The Blue Keys is a great value option for older couples
and tourists who are more interested in charm and a homelike feel than lots of amenities. Though there are Family Rooms offered, children might become bored
with the residential location and the long walks or drives to the city's
attractions. The rooms are simple and tidy, but the tiny bathrooms are a little
hard to maneuver in. Although the hotel is removed from the cruise ship
terminals, it provides a friendlier environment than the closer-in chain hotels.
Scene
Mismatched decor creates a winsome environment in this low-key hotel
This tiny 10-room hotel was converted from a pub into a hotel (there's still a pub still on the ground floor). From the outside, it looks like an older two-story house, with cream and red bricks and a mossy roof. The reception area is small and a little dark, as most of the ground floor has been allotted to the on-site pub/restaurant. The hotel doesn't really have a consistent decor scheme — crystal chandeliers and brown leather armchairs are combined with a bar painted bright turquoise and a bust of Buddha — but the eclectic look has its own charm. There's a grand piano in the corner of the restaurant that's used in some of the pub's occasional live music performances.
Location
On a quiet residential street near a park
The Blue Keys is located on a quiet residential street in a suburban neighborhood of Southampton. It's a good spot for those looking for a restful night's sleep, but bad for those who want to be within walking distance of any shops or restaurants. The train station and the city center are around 20 to 25 minutes away by foot (or five minutes by car). The large, grassy expanse of Southampton Common is a six-minute walk away, but almost every other attraction in the city is best reached by car. The cruise ship terminals are a 10-minute drive.
Rooms
Basic rooms with tiny bathrooms but a homey feel
The rooms of the hotel are minimally decorated, yet clean and cozy, with a homey bed-and-breakfast feel. Every room has a kettle and a flat-screen TV, but there are no microwaves or fridges. The bathrooms are minuscule, with almost no counter space and walk-n showers with detachable showerheads. Single Rooms (with one twin bed), Twin Rooms, Double Rooms, and Family Rooms (with a double bed and a twin bed in the same room) are available. There are no closets or wardrobes (just clothing rods) and the carpets in some rooms show evidence of wear and tear, but the rooms are quiet and affordable.
Features
On-site pub and restaurant, plus free parking and free Wi-Fi
The main feature of the hotel is the pub and restaurant on the ground floor, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily. Guests taking advantage of the bed-and-breakfast rate can have a full English breakfast or choose from lighter continental items. The pub also has a full bar with many beers on tap and an outdoor patio with several picnic benches. There is sometimes live music at night. The hotel also offers free parking and free Wi-Fi.
