Hotel Du Lac is a boutique, family-run property that's exceptionally well-located on Lake Como in the heart of Bellagio. The three-pearl hotel has a first-floor restaurant and a second-story breakfast room, both with outdoor terraces offering awesome lake views. Breakfast is free, and drinks are served at the restaurant and on the rooftop sundeck, which also overlooks the lake. However, some areas of the hotel are worn or dated, and there's no wellness facilities on-site. The hotel's 48 guest rooms range from fresh and contemporary to slightly dated, but all have AC, minibars, coffeemakers, satellite flat-screen TVs, and free WI-Fi, and some have furnished balconies with epic lake views. Travelers looking for a luxurious boutique stay nearby can consider Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.
Scene
Lakeside family-run hotel with amazing panoramic views, but some dated details
Hotel Du Lac is situated in a beautiful, five-story building that dates to the 1920s, with a rich yellow facade accented by green-shuttered windows and a terra-cotta roof. The highlight of the hotel is it's location, and the property takes advantage of the unfettered Lake Cuomo views with huge windows and panoramic terraces, including a lakeside portico with restaurant seating. Inside, however, decor feels decidedly dated. The reception area is nice enough, with a wooden reception desk and marble floors, but other areas have worn furniture and feel stuffy, such as the library lounge, where green wall-to-wall carpeting is paired with peach and floral upholstery. But as a smaller, family-owned property the hotel offers a certain intimacy and service that other three-pearl properties may lack. The hotel tends to attract many vacationing couples and some families.
Location
In the heart of Bellagio, overlooking Lake Como
Hotel Du Lac is situated in the heart of Bellagio right on Lake Como. Its central location means guests will find it easy to walk to a host of restaurants, shops, and other hotspots in five minutes or less. It's also across from a dock with private tour boats, and it's just a three-minute walk from the public ferry, which makes it a cinch to get to nearby towns like Varenna or Menaggio. Malpensa Airport is an 80-minute drive, and Milan is a 90-minute drive.
Rooms
Rooms range from fresh and contemporary to slightly dated
Guest rooms tend to be simple but tidy and comfortable, with bare wood floors and classic wood furniture. While more updated rooms pair white-painted wood furniture with faux white leather headboards and neutral upholstery, other more dated rooms may feature dark brown wood furniture and outdated green, red, or floral upholstery. Upgraded units have Juliet or furnished balconies with spectacular lake views. All rooms have AC, satellite flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, coffeemakers, and safes. Updated bathrooms can be quite chic, with gray and white tiling and inset basin sinks, however others are more dated (though well-maintained), with blue and white tiling or floral accents. Bathrooms may have walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, and all contain bidets, heated towel racks, hairdryers, and toiletries. At 140 square feet, the smallest units can feel cramped, especially compared to more spacious Deluxe Rooms that can measure up to 300 square feet.
Features
Restaurant, bar, free breakfast, and exceptional views -- but wellness facilities are off-site
For a smaller property, this hotel offers a nice set of features, geared toward relaxation. The hotel has a well-liked restaurant, bar, and breakfast room, all with views overlooking the lake. The ground-floor restaurant serves light lunches, dinner, and drinks, and features outdoor seating on a terrace and under a portico overlooking the lake, while the breakfast room has a long, second-story balcony that has beautiful panoramic lake views. Past guests have reported enjoying the free breakfast buffet, which includes a selection of hot and cold dishes. Guests also rave about the rooftop solarium, where yet another spectacular lake view can be taken in from lounge chairs while having a drink. There are several lounge areas inside, too, including a small library, but the decor is dated. While there are no wellness facilities on-site, guests have free access to the swimming pool and fitness center at Bellagio Sporting Club, a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but parking costs extra and must be reserved in advance; street parking may be available nearby. Airport or train station shuttle service can be arranged for an extra fee, and the hotel accommodates small dogs.
