Bottom Line

Villa Del Arco Beach Resort & Grand Spa is a three-and-a-half-pearl all-inclusive resort that sits on Playa Medano, with great views of Land's End. This is a family-friendly spot, and the huge pool complex features a full-size pirate ship. There are also two oceanfront restaurants for casual dining, and the three-floor spa and gym is one of the largest in Cabo San Lucas. The 222 rooms feature an excellent list of amenities, including kitchenettes (or full kitchens) and furnished balconies, but Wi-Fi isn't free and timeshare sales can be pushy. The hotel’s stretch of Medano Beach is beautiful, though the sea out here can border on dangerous, and reaching downtown requires a car. For less money, guests will find most of the same amenities at the four-pearl Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa.

Scene

Pleasant, slightly kitschy beachfront resort with a lively, family-friendly atmosphere

Among the surrounding mini-compound of Villa brand properties, Villa Del Arco Beach Resort & Grand Spa is the most lively and family-friendly of the three hotels. The architecture and decor blend oversized archways, Moroccan-style pottery, and intricate mosaic floor patterns in a way that’s tasteful but not stuffy. Even so, the go-big-or-go-home style means a little kitsch is inevitable -- this is Cabo, after all. With a full-size Spanish galleon replica anchoring its massive outdoor pool complex, it's clear the property is targeting guests who came to Cabo San Lucas to party. All-inclusive rates are popular with guests, though the atmosphere is never rowdy, which can be a blessing (and rarity) in the region. As the de facto social space, the outdoor terrace is constantly lively. Expect to see an even mix of families and couples here, with plenty small groups of friends passing through as well.

Location

In a beachfront, multi-resort complex, a 10-minute drive from downtown Cabo San Lucas

Situated on the edge of downtown Cabo San Lucas, the hotel is conveniently located on Medano Beach -- one of the area’s most beautiful. Keep in mind that the beach is a bit less protected here than in town, and thus can be dangerous at times. The location also means that without wheels, guests are stuck at the resort, and there's nothing within walking distance but sister properties. San Lucas’ popular restaurants, shops, and the marina are all roughly 10 minutes away by car. Guests can also book a tour or charter boat directly on the property to escape to El Arco (the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas) in approximately 10 minutes as well. Los Cabos International Airport is 35 minutes away by car, north of charming San Jose del Cabo

Rooms

Large, classic rooms with kitchenettes, marble bathrooms, and private balconies -- some with ocean views

Room decor blends contemporary and traditional Mexican design elements, though it all feels slightly dated when compared to some of the more contemporary resort choices in the area. Plain pine cabinetry, ornate talavera tile inlays, travertine floors, and bright modern art combine to create a look that’s homey and classic, with just enough local flair.Entry-level Deluxe Studio Suites offer 546-square-foot (51-square-meter), one-room layouts with spacious living and sleeping areas, plus a kitchenette (with microwave, mini-fridge, sink, and electric cooktop). One-Bedroom and Two-Bedroom Suites offer at least 1,254 square feet (117 square meters) of space that includes separate bedrooms, plus a large, open-concept living, dining, and kitchen area. Balconies are oversized and full-size washers and dryers are also included. Two-Bedroom and Three-Bedroom Penthouses provide massive floor plans up to 3,200 square feet (297 square meters) including a 1,200-square-foot (111-square-meter) furnished balcony with a private whirlpool hot tub and stunning, panoramic ocean views. Expect vaulted ceilings and features like master bathrooms with whirlpool hot tubs, additional TVs, and a full kitchen with top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances.Standard features include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, minibars, electronic safes, and Wi-Fi, however, the latter is only available via a pricey daily plan. Bathrooms in every category are done in travertine and tile that's combined with brushed nickel fixtures, making them feel sophisticated. Every bathroom features at least a shower/tub combo and generic bath amenities.

Features

A huge pool complex, two oceanfront restaurants, and a massive spa, but an unpredictable beach

Like most Cabo area all-inclusives, the centerpiece of the property is its large outdoor water complex. The space encompasses a large, family-friendly main pool with a full-size Spanish galleon (including an onboard pirate-themed bar), a kids' play area with fountains, hot tubs, and a swim-up bar. The smaller, adjacent pool has a quieter, adult-centric atmosphere. Both pools are lined with ample shaded seating and poolside drink service is available. The beach here is beautiful and popular, though vendors can be an issue and the surf isn't as calm as it is in town, meaning swimming can be dangerous at times. Kayaks can be rented, and the hotel has a beach boutique as well.Oceanfront dining is a big plus, and include El Neptuno and El Patron; the former serves French twists on local cuisine, while the latter offers straightforward Mexican classics. Two additional restaurants -- a taco bar and a light-fare restaurant -- provide poolside finger foods, and the taco bar is especially popular with previous guests. Room service is also available for a nominal fee. All-inclusive rates are a popular choice here, though plenty of guests opt to pay as they go as well. The Desert Spa is arguably the largest spa and fitness center complex in Cabo San Lucas. The massive, three-story building spans 31,000 square feet (2,880 square meters) with each floor offering a dedicated set of services. In addition to the list of conventional massage treatments, it features a hydrotherapy circuit, a large whirlpool hot tub, saunas, Swiss showers, a cold plunge pool, and steam rooms. An adjacent full-service salon offers a similarly long list of beauty services including hair, manicures, and pedicures. There's also a proper gym.Hotel guests also have access to some shared amenities (via a free shuttle) at the two neighboring sister properties -- Villa la Estancia and Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa. Valet parking is provided free of charge in a secure lot with 24-hour security. Wi-Fi in all common areas is only available via the same paid in-room plans mentioned above. Beware that some guests have noted time-share pitches to be aggressive.
