Small, affordable property with quiet ambiance
The Hesperia is housed in an old building just off of the Grand Canal of Venice. The lobby area is warm and inviting, albeit relatively sparse, with a few Murano glass chandeliers and a small breakfast room. As a smaller property, the Hesperia doesn't get big groups, and the ambiance in the lobby is quiet and low-key. Most guests tend to be middle-aged or older, in search of a convenient, comfortable location that's easy on the wallet.

The hotel is just off the Grand Canal in the Cannaregio neighborhood, a five-minute walk from the Saint Lucia railway station and about 20 minutes on foot to the Rialto Bridge and San Marco area. The vaporetto (water bus) to the airport is just across the canal from the hotel, making it convenient for both rail and air travelers. The streets immediately surrounding the property are quiet, but numerous tourist shops and restaurants are within a two-minute walk.

All rooms come with minibars and small flat-screen desktop TVs. Both en-suite rooms and rooms with shared toilets and separate shared bathrooms are available. Bathrooms are tiny, as is the norm in Venice, with bidets, walk-in showers, wall-mounted hairdryers, and basic toiletries. Some of the rooms have views over the canal; these also tend to be the noisiest, but the area doesn’t have much nightlife in the immediate vicinity so it doesn’t pose a problem for most guests. Some of the canal-facing rooms on the top floor are split into two levels, with bathrooms and a closet on the main floor and a bed and desk on the mezzanine level -- these rooms also have exposed wooden beams.

The Hesperia’s main amenity is its free continental breakfast, which features a variety of breads and spreads, as well as cereal, cheeses, and meats. There’s no restaurant on-site although there is coffee, tea, beer, wine, and spirits for sale. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel for a fee (although past guests report getting a free five-hour pass upon check-in), and guests without computers can use the laptop in the lobby (also for a fee). There’s also a rooftop sitting area facing away from the canal with views of other roofs.
