When it comes to ‘must-see’ attractions in Los Angeles, The Getty Center in Brentwood is easily in the top three. First, admission is free (though parking costs $15). It’s known as much for its art and photography collection as it is for its landscaping, stunning architecture by Richard Meier, and sweeping views. (Note: There are two Getty Museums, the other being the Getty Villa in Malibu.)

Opened in 1997, the Getty in Brentwood is one of the newest museums in Los Angeles. Its collection includes pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs. There is almost always a special exhibit of photographs on view, as well as famous paintings such as “Irises” by Vincent Van Gough.

Beyond the traditional art, The Getty’s gardens deserve equal attention. Designed by Robert Irwin, the Central Garden is like a living sculpture. One can stroll the gardens for hours, or simply sit and observe the landscape as the light changes.

Be sure to have lunch or dinner at the Cafe at the Getty Center; reservations required, and fill quickly. While you dine, you can take in the views and enjoy a fantastic meal.

For a hotel near the Getty Center, check out the Luxe Hotel Sunset Blvd or the Hotel Angeleno, where you might be able to see the The Getty from your hotel room.
