Upon first glance, the low-rise, bright-yellow property with wrought-iron balconies could easily be mistaken for a private estate. The Hotel Paraiso del Mar is cozy and welcoming, and on the smaller side with just 18 rooms. It emits a quintessential Mediterranean, coastal vibe with its brightly colored exterior, white shutters, palm trees, and terra-cotta entryway. Grounds at the hotel are lush and vibrantly colorful and green, though guests will most likely be looking out at the gorgeous sea and beach, which is visible from multiple vantage points. Inside, the hotel is old-fashioned, furnished with framed artwork, cream-colored sofas, an armoire with dolls and tea sets, and chandeliers. This won't appeal to all, but most guests -- primarily vacationing couples -- find the homey atmosphere pleasant.

Previous guests have had only positive things to say about the hotel's location. It is a long drive from Malaga Airport (50 minutes), but the surrounding area makes the drive worthwhile. Having the pristine beach directly accessible via a flight of stairs is a huge bonus for the property. There are also plenty of bar and restaurant options within walking distance of the hotel. The popular Plaza Balcon de Europa is a 10-minute walk from the property and Nerja's town center is a 12-minute walk. 

The 18 rooms and suites are comfortable and surprisingly spacious, though outfitted in old-fashioned, soft-tone decor that could benefit from an update. They feature sleek marble flooring, a variety of wood and faux-leather furniture, floral-patterned linens, plenty of natural light, and neutral-colored walls. Many rooms have a private furnished balcony or terrace, some with lovely sea views -- guests report it's worth the upgrade. All rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Attractive bathrooms are done in marble, with jetted tubs, pedestal sinks, bidets, free bath products, bathrobes, and hairdryers. Some previous guests staying in rooms near reception have complained about hotel noise. 

Truth be told, there aren't many features on-site. Still for couples and beachgoers, the Hotel Paraiso del Mar will likely fit the bill. Most notable is that the lovely stretch of sandy beach can be accessed via a staircase on the property. The hotel also has a pleasant, if a bit small, pool with excellent sea views. The surrounding decks have ample sunbeds and umbrellas, plus there's a hot tub. There's no gym or full-restaurant, but there are a lobby bar and buffet breakfasts, which have received positive reviews for variety and quality.
