Bottom Line

This lower-middle-range hotel is tucked away in the scenic hills of Mijas, a five-minute walk from the small town center and its restaurants and shops. The closest beach is about a 20-minute drive away, and a bus stops near the hotel for easy transport. Some areas of the hotel -- including Superior Rooms -- have lovely views, but furnishings are dated throughout and showing wear. The 204 rooms are old-fashioned and the Standard Rooms lack modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs (there are tube TVs instead) and mini-fridges. Still, the pool area is pleasant, the spa offers massages and a whirlpool, and the buffet restaurant receives positive reviews. The Riu Hotel Luca Costa Lago is only slightly more contemporary, but it offers more on-site features, particularly for children, and is a short walk from the beach, too.

Oyster Hotel Review

TRH Mijas

Scene

Andalusian-style hotel with outdated, worn areas but pretty views

The low-rise hotel has a white exterior with wrought-iron balconies, yellow detailing, and plants in small blue pots that give it a charming vibe. The hills are a pleasant backdrop to the building and there are plenty of palm trees and flowers throughout the property. Andalusian-style interiors aren't as attractive, filled with old-fashioned decor such as seating in various patterned prints and clashing mustard-yellow tile. Large pieces of artwork, carved wooden furniture, and a fireplace do add some homey touches. A small courtyard with a fountain, fruit trees, and cobblestone is pretty, but the outdoor pool and solarium with lovely views of the surrounding area and distant sea are the most appealing spaces. The low-key atmosphere and lack of kid-centric facilities make this hotel most popular with older couples.

Location

Quiet, scenic hillside location within walking distance of restaurants

Despite what would appear to be an isolated location -- in the hillside of Mijas -- but the small town center is just a five-minute walk away. There, travelers will find museums, restaurants, and shops. Some nearby dining options include Restaurante Bar & Fiesta (two-minute walk), Restaurante la Fuente (three-minute walk), and Restaurante Pampa Tablas y Tapas (four-minute walk). There is no beach within walking distance, however, but Fuengirola's beaches are not too far away. Los Boliches, a popular beach spot in Fuengirola, is a 15-minute drive away and a bus stop near the property will take guests there in about 20 minutes. The Malaga Airport is about 22 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Attractive wooden furniture, but old-fashioned and showing wear

The 204 air-conditioned rooms have some homey furnishings, but they're largely dated and showing wear. The actual furnishings vary a bit, but the design generally consists of wooden furniture that has character, beige carpet, patterned upholstery, and white walls with artwork. Wear and tear is visible throughout. Standard Rooms have dated tube-style TVs and have to pay for mini-fridges, while Superior Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and furnished balconies -- many of which have lovely views. Guests agree that it's worth upgrading. In-room safes require a fee. Bathrooms have white tile with blue decorative tiles adding a nice splash of color. Each bathroom has a shower/tub combo, bidet, free bath products, and hairdryer. Note that some past guests have complained of noise due to thin walls.
