You might not know it by name, but you’ve probably seen Malta’s Azure Window before. For instance, it was the filming location for Daenerys and Khal Drogo’s wedding in the very first episode of “Game of Thrones.” Beloved by photographers, tourists, and scientists alike, the geological formation on the island of Gozo has finally succumbed to erosion, collapsing into the sea during a storm. Though Malta mourns the loss of an iconic sight, there are still plenty of impressive ones that remain, from natural formations to ancient temples, including these five.

Though not as popular as the Azure Window, this limestone arch can be found on Gozo, too. Travelers be warned—it could suffer the same fate at any time, so be very careful when visiting.

If you’re looking for pristine nature, the tiny island of Comino has it. There’s only one hotel on the island (see below) and no cars. The main attraction is the Blue Lagoon, which is a haven for snorkelers and rock climbers.

This cave in south Malta holds the remains of animals stranded here during the last Ice Age, like deer and hippopotamuses. Scientists also discovered evidence of the first human settlement on Malta which dates back about 7,000 years.

There are multiple ancient temple sites across Malta dating back between 3600 B.C. and 700 B.C., seven of which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are managed by Heritage Malta, who charges admission to the sites to help fund their preservation.
