9 Mexico Hotels With Lazy Rivers

See recent posts by Stefanie Waldek

There are two types of lazy-river fans. There are the ones who actually laze in the river, simply floating along in an inner tube. Then there are the ones who want to swim through at breakneck speeds and push friends and family under the waterfall. More often than not, adults make up the former category, children the latter. But no matter what type of lazy-river rider you are, there’s a hotel in Mexico that’ll offer a lazy river with just the right atmosphere you’re looking for. Here are nine Mexico hotels that have lazy rivers on-property.

1. Excellence Playa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres

With a five-pearl rating, Excellence Playa Mujeres is one of the top luxury all-inclusives in the Cancun area. While you might expect a lazy river to be a great amenity for kids, you won’t find them splashing around here — the resort is for adults only. When you’ve had enough lazing in the river, you can try one of the seven pools; spas with saunas, steam rooms, and a hydrotherapy pool; nine restaurants; 11 bars; or the 24-hour gym.

2. Velas Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta

Kids are definitely welcome at Velas Vallarta, and families often flock here due to the large rooms with kitchenettes. There are three pools at this all-inclusive property (and one swim-up bar!), and two are connected by a lazy river. Other amenities include a spa with beachfront massage cabins, a fitness center, tennis courts, and three restaurants.

3. Iberostar Paraiso Lindo, Playa Paraiso

Though there’s a lazy river here, there’s nothing lazy about this all-inclusive resort. The family-friendly Iberostar Paraiso Lindo has dozens of activities for parents and children alike, ranging from a long list of water sports (like kayaking and scuba lessons) to a water park (home to the lazy river and a wave pool) to on-land sports (18-hole golf course, archery, etc.). For relaxation, there are sun loungers on the beach and a full-service spa. Guests here can take free shuttles to the other four resorts that are part of the complex and use their amenities.

4. Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort, Playa Mujeres

Without a doubt, this all-inclusive resort has the most exclusive lazy river in Mexico: It’s only open to Preferred Club guests. It’s probably worth the upgrade, since Preferred Club perks include a free day pass to the wet areas of the spa, 20 percent off spa treatments, and a special reserved area at the beach. But all hotel guests get to enjoy a water park, themed parties, musical performances, cooking and cocktail classes, and more.

5. Valentin Imperial Maya, Playa Del Carmen

You can get a two-for-one deal at the adults-only all-inclusive Valentin Imperial Maya: There’s not only a lazy river, but there are swim-up rooms along it, allowing guests to simply take a few steps from their bed to the water. When you’ve had enough of swimming (or floating), you’ve got eight restaurants to choose from — and 11 bars with top-shelf liquor included.

6. The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort, Nuevo Vallarta

The long lazy river at the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort flows around the massive free-form pool, but if you’re looking for more action, you can hop off near the wave pool and the waterslide. For some dry-land action, there’s a world-class golf course and a relaxing spa.

7. Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa, Akumal

When you’re talking about a mega-resort, the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa is probably what you’re picturing. The hotel has 948 rooms, and it spans the jungle and the beach. There is, of course, a lazy river here, and there are also three pools, one of the area’s top spas, eight restaurants, and 13 bars.

8. Four Seasons Punta Mita, Punta Mita

It doesn’t get much more luxurious than the Four Seasons Punta Mita. Aside from the lazy river, there are three pools (one is adults-only), four restaurants, a spa, 10 tennis courts, a yacht that guests can charter, access to two Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses, and several on-site boutiques. But the hotel doesn’t just cater to couples — it’s actually a family-friendly resort, with free a kids’ and teens’ club that even has a movie theater.

9. The Grand Mayan Acapulco, Acapulco

While some hotels are geared towards staying active, the Grand Mayan Acapulco is designed for relaxation. The swanky pool is delightfully serene, as is the lazy river. There is a gym next to the spa, should you feel like breaking a sweat, but no one would judge you for simply lounging the day away beachside. Guests should note that Vida Vacations club members get priority at this resort.
