8 Destinations That Cater to Every Vice

See recent posts by Katherine Alex Beaven

Vices are often tied to the seven deadly sins -- greed, gluttony, lust, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride -- but these behaviors don't always have to be so dramatic. Generally speaking, a vice is defined as an act that is viewed as pleasurable for some and wicked or detrimental to others. Far be it from us to encourage bad behavior, but we're willing to bet you've got a couple of vices hiding up your sleeve. So, why not combine your love of travel with your favorite vice? We've rounded up eight destinations to entice every vice, making it more fun than ever to feel a little naughty.

1. Macau, China: Gambling

Galaxy Hotel, Macau

Galaxy Hotel, Macau

Believe it or not, Macau’s glitzy, glamorous casinos pull in more gamblers than Las Vegas. Part of this may be because Macau — an autonomous region on the southeastern coast of China — has the closest legal casinos to China, a country with over 1.3 billion people. In fact, gambling is so rampant in Macau that its revenues are said to account for over 50 percent of the entire economy. It has even earned the nickname “Las Vegas of Asia.” If you’re looking to feel the rush of putting it all on black or testing just how strong your poker face is, head to the famous casino-lined Cotai Strip. Here, you’ll find over 40 24-hour casinos. Make sure to load up on Hong Kong dollars, as this is the preferred gambling currency.

2. Riviera Maya, Mexico: Lust

Sin Room at Desire Riviera Maya Pearl, Puerto Morelos

Sin Room at Desire Riviera Maya Pearl, Puerto Morelos

Looking for lust in all the wrong places? Head to Riviera Maya, where you’ll find an indecent amount of sexy hotels and experiences. Located on soft-sand beaches, the topless- and clothing-optional hotels here are a great way to satisfy your lusty desires. If you’re seeking a spot where you can strip down, the Desire Riviera Maya Resort in Puerto Morelos offers a clothing-optional environment full of public romps, hot tubs, all-inclusive booze, and sexy massages. For a little more luxury with a free-spirited, clothing-optional vibe, check out the slightly more upscale Desire Riviera Riviera Maya Pearl Resort. If you’re more of a voyeur, that’s okay, too. Temptation Cancun Resort is a topless-optional spot where women are encouraged to shed their bikini tops. Both Desire properties are couples-only, though singles are welcome at Temptation.

3. Havana, Cuba: Smoking

Cigar Bar and Shop at Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa, Havana

Smoking is a popular vice, though some countries make it harder to puff in peace. It’s no secret that smoking is common in some European countries, particularly Serbia and Bulgaria. Interestingly, Japan allows visitors to smoke indoors at some establishments, including restaurants and bars, but it requires smokers to stand at designated areas outside. However, when it comes to smoking cigars, Cuba is the place to go. Access to the country and its cigars was a no-go until a few years ago, but it’s still illegal to buy and sell Cuban cigars in the U.S., so it’s worth traveling to the source. You might even want to time your trip for Havana‘s Cigar Festival, usually in February or March each year. Otherwise (or in addition to), head to one of the most celebrated cigar shops in the city, La Casa del Habano, where you can lounge at the bar, sip some local rum, and smoke some of the finest cigars in the country.

4. Tokyo, Japan: Gluttony

Food at Haneda Airport, Tokyo

France may be considered the ultimate foodie destination for some, but those in-the-know go to Tokyo. At the time of publishing, this condensed metropolis is packed with 230 Michelin-starred restaurants — double the number you’ll find in Paris. Japan’s food scene is vast, covering everything from savory ramen to delicate sushi. Like many things here, cuisine is taken very seriously, whether you’re at a fine-dining restaurant or a street cart. Looking to get your fill of food and booze? Hit up a Japanese nomihodai, a timed, fixed-price all-you-can-drink menu special that sometimes includes food. It’s often offered at local bars and izakayas. Tokyo is full of ways to feed your face, but if your gluttony calls for indulging in something else, this quirky, creative, and ultra-efficient city will likely have something to satisfy that urge, too.

5. Maldives: Revenge

If living well is the best revenge, then posting picture-perfect snaps from your island resort in the Maldives will leave your frenemies hot with travel envy. This gorgeous archipelago could hardly take an unattractive photo if it tried. We’re talking sugar-white sand, warm breezes, impossibly turquoise waters, and luxe overwater bungalows. For many, it’s the ultimate vacation destination; the collective happy place that we find ourselves going to when work becomes overwhelming or the kids are screaming too loudly. The underwater scenes are just as beautiful, and you can get the ultimate revenge with stories of that time you swam with whale sharks and manta rays, snorkeled with colorful fish, or did a night dive among the sparkling bioluminescence. Or, just soak in the ocean views with a cocktail — both of which will help you savor the taste of sweet, sweet revenge.

6. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Sloth

There is no better way to bask in your laziness than at an all-inclusive resort, where you’ll hardly have to lift a finger — unless you want to. The Dominican Republic is one of our favorite places to check into an all-inclusive, as it has the whole package: sunny weather, pristine beaches, sparkling water, and friendly vibes. Plus, Punta Cana in particular is packed with amazing all-inclusive resorts, from family-friendly properties to romantic, adults-only escapes. While we always encourage travelers to get out and explore the local culture beyond their hotel, we know as well as anyone who has been here that it’s hard to peel yourself off your beachside or poolside lounger. The beauty of having everything at your fingertips — cocktails, food, activities, the beach, pools, spa treatments, and more — is just too tempting.

Our Punta Cana Hotel Pick:

7. Italy: Alcohol

Agriturismo Fattoria Lavacchio, Tuscany

Agriturismo Fattoria Lavacchio, Tuscany

While there are several countries that offer alcohol-fueled experiences, few make drinking feel as effortless as Italy. Not only is the country home to a wide range of delicious wines, but it also presents an excellent selection of liquor and even some decent beer. Tuscany may be Italy’s most well-known wine region, but don’t overlook the country’s other fabulous options, like Piedmont, Abruzzo, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna (also fantastic for cheese), and Sicily. If cocktails are more your thing, you’re in luck — this is the home of campari, aperol, vermouth, amaro, grappa, limoncello, cynar, and fernet-branca, to name a few. It’ll be easy to drink your way through this country. We recommend starting with a traditional afternoon aperitivo, adding some wine over dinner, and finishing with a great grappa — salute!

8. Dubai: Indulgence

Royal Suite at Burj Al Arab, Dubai

Royal Suite at Burj Al Arab, Dubai

This Middle Eastern destination may be smack in the middle of the desert, but that doesn’t stop it from being a hot spot for wealthy travelers. This is where affluent travelers go when they want the ultimate in luxury. From stylish duds to sparkling jewelry, Dubai is known for its stellar (and expensive) high-end shops. Feel like dining on caviar and five-figure bottles of Champagne? Head to Burj Khalifa — the world’s tallest building — and make a toast on the 122nd floor overlooking the city. Want an opulent hotel that will spoil you rotten with decadent amenities and personal butler service? The Burj Al Arab claims to be most luxurious hotel in the world, touting features like Rolls-Royce house cars, Swarovski chandeliers, interior waterfalls and an aquarium, 24-carat gold iPads, and a staff ratio of six people for each guest room.
