Texture, pattern, color — the W in Buckhead has it all; in fact, it has it all right in the lobby! This design-focused, chic hotel offers a younger, funkier alternative to upscale hotels in Atlanta, and the contemporary style ranges from the antler-adorned chandeliers in the lobby to the uber-modern, minimalist decor in other common areas. But what we really covet are the cozy chairs in the rooms, where playful patterns and mismatched artwork create a whimsical vibe.
nhow Berlin
The nhow Berlin, overlooking the River Spree, takes bright and bold to a whole other level — arguably a whole other planet. The futuristic, space-age decor ranges from a pod-like front desk, to zany patterns, to funky lighting, to rooms with modern furniture and colorful accents. We think that the photo murals in the elevators are a bit disconcerting (does she see something that we don’t?) but they just add to the over-the-top vibe of the hotel.
Viceroy Santa Monica
Bright, bold, and lacquered — interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s style is far from subtle. But compared to some of the other looks featured in this post, the decor she chose for this Viceroy is less in-your-face, more cute-and-fun. Ivy green chairs add a pop of color to the hotel’s restaurant, while patterned wall paper and bright furniture give the rooms a memorable, yet livable, vibe.
Maison 140 Beverly Hills
Also designed by Wearstler, Maison 140 livens up its small spaces with color, pattern, and eclectic accents. The lobby, like the Mandarin rooms, goes bold with red-on-black-on-white, highlighted by Asian murals, patterned rugs, and leather sofas, while the Parisian rooms feature subtler color pops in the pastel headboards.
Hotel Silken Puerta America, Madrid
Hotel Silken Puerta America is known for its over-the-top design, from the colorful facade of the hotel to the rooms. Each of the 12 floors was executed by a different designer, and range from futuristic, space-like decor to sexy style with levitating beds and bold colors. And the rooftop bar also features stark contrasts with simple white furniture set against bright walls and ceilings.
Delano Hotel, Miami
Famed designer Philippe Starck put his mark on the Delano, which means plenty of surreal, oddball looks that make you feel like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole. Everything feels oddly out of proportion: Chairs are too big, ceilings are too low, and other things are in the wrong place altogether. The overall effect is dazzling and transporting.
Crosby Street Hotel, New York City
Opened in October 2009 on a quiet, cobblestoned street in SoHo, the 86-room Crosby Street Hotel is characterized by vibrant public spaces, such as the bar (complete with colorful lanterns, collage-like artwork, and bright patterned furniture) and lobby. And though the rooms feature a black-and-white motif, bold patterns and colorful accents keep them looking anything but demure.
Yotel, New York City
European chain Yotel is known for its hip atmosphere and affordable rates, and this Midtown West outpost is certainly hip, with three bars, a Latin-Asian fusion restaurant, and an outerspace-like design. Though we love the funky lighting of the lobby and the space-age white-on-white rooms, our favorite bright and bold look can be found in Dohyo, where colorful Asian-inspired murals make the space funky and cool.
Mondrian Los Angeles
Starck is also behind the design of the Mondrian where the intention, according to the hotel, was to bring the beach to Hollywood, with blond wood floors in the lobby standing in for sand and a massive slatted pool deck playing the part of beach. But Starck couldn’t help but bring a bit of his signature pizazz, which can be seen in the ADCB restaurant, complete with bright furniture, gilded ceiling accents, and colorful lighting.
Room Mate Grace, New York City
We wouldn’t suggest returning to your room at the Room Mate Grace until you’re good and sober, because otherwise it could take you a while to find it! The vertigo-inducing look of the hallways is just the tip of the iceberg at this bright and bold hotel: Neon lighting at the pool, hysterical murals in the bathrooms, bright walls in the lobby, and funky wallpaper in the rooms all add to this hotel’s over-the-top look.
Ambassadors Bloomsbury, London
The Ambassadors hotel has just enough style that it’s modern and cheery, without being over-the-top or intimidating. Bright pillows, throws, and artwork make the rooms colorful, while similarly subtle accents in the lobby, restaurant, and meeting rooms create bright spaces in an often dreary London.
