With fall in full force (and winter on the horizon), now is the perfect time to step away from your workaday routine and nestle into a long weekend retreat. After a day in the brisk air, there’s little better than getting snug with a cozy blanket and cocoa (OK, hot toddy...we won’t tell!) by a crackling fireplace. From upstate New York to Oregon, these nine properties ooze coziness, providing the ideal backdrops for kicking back and hunkering down.

The Whiteface Lodge, Lake Placid, New York

KANU Lounge at The Whiteface Lodge/Oyster

Tucked away in the Adirondacks, The Whiteface Lodge is the epitome of mountain luxury. It raises the bar on cozy getaways with two Adirondack-style lakeside lean-tos, cushily furnished and available to guests for cigars and cognac by a fire pit under the starry night sky. Furnishings throughout the resort are handcrafted from hand-milled timber (you can smell the fragrant woody aroma the minute you step foot inside), and every suite has its own cast-iron fireplace. As if that weren’t cozy enough, there are warm cookies at turn-down and nightly bonfires with s’mores. The quaint, walkable village of Lake Placid is accessible via the lodge’s complimentary town shuttle. Bobsledding at the U.S. Olympic Sports Complex is just a little farther.

The Ocean Lodge, Cannon Beach, Oregon

Located on a beautiful spot at the south end of Cannon Beach, The Ocean Lodge attempts to be a home-away-from-home for its guests — and succeeds. Each and every one of the 45 accommodations comes with a working fireplace and a kitchenette. The homey vibe continues with cookies and organic coffee in the lobby around the clock, and a well-stocked library. It’s also pet-friendly. And what could be cozier that cuddling up with your pooch and a novel in front of the fire?

The Maritime Hotel, New York City

This landmark building fits right into the modern, cool hub of Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood with signature porthole windows, a white-tiled exterior, and elevated outdoor terraces overlooking Ninth Avenue. But inside, it’s pure hygge (the Danish concept that loosely translates to “coziness and comfortable conviviality.”) The property recently revealed a transformation, with changes including a new 16th-century stone fireplace (which the hotelier found in the south of France), a ceiling made with beautiful narrow-slatted oak beams, reupholstered lobby sofas with sketches of subway scenes, and a refresh of the much-photographed nautical-themed mural. Guests can cozy up by the fireplace and enjoy light bites and cocktails from Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s La Sirena, the hotel’s ground floor restaurant.

Since it’s located right outside the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Bearskin Lodge on the River Hotel is in a quiet area, and indeed, has hiking trails beginning practically at its doorstep. After an afternoon of fresh-air fun, the lodge, which features rough-hewn stone work and log furnishings, is welcoming.  Two small outdoor fire pits add to the ambience and provide nice spots to warm up. Many rooms have gas fireplaces and whirlpools. And to top it off, Dollywood theme park is less than a 20-minute drive away, in Pigeon Forge.

The Lodge at Sea Island, Saint Simons Island, Georgia

You don’t have to be in a cold-weather destination to get your cozy on. Resembling an English-style manor, the 40-room Lodge at Sea Island on Saint Simon Island, Georgia, has plenty of Southern charm. As the sun sets over the ocean, guests can curl up in one of the Adirondack chairs on the lawn while the resident bagpiper performs. After indulging in a fine red and filet at the hotel’s steakhouse, Colt & Alison, the s’morrier (yes, that’s a job) will make you gourmet s’mores to enjoy around the bonfire. Your personal butler will also bring you milk and freshly baked cookies before bed each night, and offer to draw you a rose petal bath. It’s pretty much cozy heaven. Among the more interesting amenities to be enjoyed here is a shooting school, with the feel of an old-timey gentlemen’s club — big leather chairs and all.

Spring Creek Ranch, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

If you’re looking to get cozy out west, look to this relatively secluded retreat set in a wildlife refuge more than 700 feet above the Jackson Valley. You’ll be surrounded by Instagram feed-filling views of the Tetons. Snow coach tours to Yellowstone National Park, a little over an hour away, are offered, as well as horse-drawn sleigh rides, from which you can take in the twinkling lights of Jackson under a warm lap robe. Spring Creek Ranch’s Wilderness Adventure Spa emphasizes a holistic approach to wellness, with unique soothers such as soul readings and the Teton Forest Massage.

The Little Nell, Aspen, Colorado

Get cozy at approximately 7,900 feet above sea level! The Little Nell in Aspen offers ski-in/ski-out access as well as amazing scenery. All rooms have fireplaces and heated bathroom floors. Guests can indulge in a cocktail made from the top-shelf liquor and martini shaker in the in-room wet bar, enjoy a long bubble bath with Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, or a have dip in the heated outdoor pool. It’s also just steps from Aspen’s main lifts, and offers first tracks benefits, free transportation to and from all four area mountains, and tons of seasonal outings.

Enjoy a relaxing desert escape from the chilly weather at this appropriately-named hideaway. Its newly-renovated Spa Suites will help you keep cozy. A large sectional in the living area invites friends or family to unwind by the glass-rock fireplace. A wet bar, which sits off to the side, only adds to the atmosphere. Canopied patio daybeds tempt for an alfresco nap alone, or snuggle session with a loved one. And the cozy piece de resistance: a private outdoor tub for a candlelit bath under the stars.

Hope Lake Lodge, Cortland, New York

Hope Lake Lodge is technically a resort, but feels more like a country inn, surrounded by forests and hills. At its Waterfalls Spa, sink into a balneotherapy tub soak, during which the vibration of music comes through the water to soothe muscles and LED lights provide calming light therapy, all while you’re detoxing. For a more active pursuit, head over to the zip lines and mountain coaster, both easily accessible from the lodge. About an hour’s drive west is Seneca Lake and its wine trail. While known for its Rieslings and Gewürztraminers, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is also getting noticed for ice wine, a dessert aperitif made from grapes that have frozen while still on the vine.
