It’s true, every great trip presents an adventure, whether that means tasting a bizarre food item for the first time, overcoming a language barrier while communicating with locals, or finding the path less traveled. Some getaways, however, push us as travelers beyond our wildest imaginations -- both emotionally and physically.

Case-in-point: At Skylodge Adventure Suites in Peru, guests can spend the night in a pod that’s suspended on the side of a mountain. Yes, really. Made from aerospace aluminum, the transparent capsules, which can sleep up to eight, display stunning views of the Sacred Valley.

Even getting there is an adventure -- and not one for the faint of heart. Guests will have to ascend 1,300 feet to reach their capsule. Keep in mind the trek up also includes crossing a hanging bridge that’s approximately 600 feet above ground, so travel light. Getting (or should we say whizzing) down is just as thrilling, as it includes zip-lining over the Sacred Valley.

However, despite the remote location, there are some comfortable amenities available, including a private bathroom, a small dining area, and four beds with quality mattresses. Stays also include breakfast and dinner (with wine), plus transportation to and from Cusco. The pods run on solar power, down to the small reading lamps next to the beds.

A stay here will run you approximately $410 per night, but that’s a small price to pay for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The only remaining question: Do you have the guts?
