Bottom Line

The towering Hyatt Regency Atlanta is an upper-middle-range hotel with more than 1,200 guest rooms and a rotating restaurant with incredible downtown views. The hotel is conveniently connected to public transport and for access to the airport in about 25 minutes. Rooms are modern and functional with a corporate style, and there are a total of three restaurants, along with an impressive gym and a seasonal outdoor pool on-site. With a FedEx Office business center, and 180,000 square feet of meeting space, the property caters to business travelers, but its downtown location makes it convenient for tourists, as well. For less corporate surrounds, along with a spa, guests could consider the similarly priced W Atlanta - Downtown.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hyatt Regency Atlanta

Scene

Sleek, modern, and offering birds-eye views inside and out

Great views are the name of the game at the Hyatt Regency. The towering hotel has an atrium/courtyard lobby, which can get noisy, and above which are 22 stories of guest rooms with hallways looking down on the scene. Many rooms have balconies, as well, offering views outside and in. The lobby and hallways are modern and minimally decorated, emphasizing the sheer scale of the place. White marble combines with sleek wood paneling, pops of red, and the occasional abstract painting for a look that's restrained and sophisticated. The lobby gastropub, Twenty-Two Storys, is an airy, low-lit space with lots of dark wood and brown leather, and flat-screen TVs behind the bar and around the room. Sway restaurant is somewhat earthier, with natural wood tables, and colorful photographs of agricultural scenes and landscapes on the walls -- the menu is southern-style. The real highlight of the Hyatt Regency is the sleek Polaris restaurant-lounge, located within an iconic, blue dome atop the hotel. With a rotating floor that offers 360-degree views of the city, Polaris is a modern, brightly lit space that's worth the trip upstairs. Guests include many business travelers, as there are great corporate features on offer, though many tourists do come here, as well.

Location

In the heart of downtown Atlanta

The Hyatt Regency Atlanta is conveniently located in the city's downtown. In a bustling part of town, the hotel is surrounded by other hotels, office buildings, restaurants, and shops. City attractions, like the World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, and Imagine It! Children's Museum, are all within about a 10-minute walk. The Peachtree metro is just a block away, and the hotel is connected to the stop via the Peachtree Mall (there is a skyway from the hotel to the mall). The airport is a 15- to 30-minute drive, traffic-depending, or about 25 minutes via rail from Peachtree station.

Rooms

Modern and sparse, with work stations and iPod docks

Rooms at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta are modern and sparse, using a mix of gray, black, and red. Abstract, color-blocked prints add splashes of bright yellow and green to the steely rooms, warming them up a great deal. Moderately large and with narrow, sharped-lined furniture, the rooms still have a corporate air that may not suit every guest. Each room has a sleek workspace with a desk and a granite counter, along with a cushioned reading chair and ottoman. Standard features also include air-conditioning, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, iHome stereos, coffeemakers, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have mini-fridges. Bathrooms are slick and compact, with faux-wood tiling in the shower stalls; hairdryers and KenetMD bath products are provided. Noise can be an issue, traveling into rooms from the cacophonous atrium-lobby and the bustling city outside. Note that City Queen rooms are significantly smaller and located in a private tower with direct gym and business center access.
