Vila Nova Hotel is a three-pearl property, conveniently located near the beach and golfing in the center of Ponta Delgada. Its 102 clean, though simple and dated, rooms feature AC, free Wi-Fi, shower/tub combos, and TVs with cable channels -- most TVs are old tube-style and only some units have mini-fridges and balconies. Drawing mostly couples and some families, guests can expect a good range of basic features like a buffet restaurant, free breakfast, room service, small game room and gym area, heated outdoor pool with drink service, lobby bar with snacks, and free overnight shoeshines. For a better bang-for-your-buck, check out the nearby Caloura Hotel Resort, where you'll also get a sauna, clifftop sea views, and tennis courts.
Scene
Mid-range property that takes care of the basics but is in need of a refresh
Vila Nova Hotel is relatively new, having opened in 2002, though it's already starting to show visible signs of wear and tear. While spaces like the lobby and outdoor pool area feel fresh and contemporary, outdated wooden furniture and decor in the rooms and restaurant make the hotel look behind the times. In a nutshell, this three-pearl property is convenient, clean, and covers all the basics without any bells and whistles. Surprisingly, this hotel manages to keep a usually quiet atmosphere despite its central location and position along the flight path of the airport -- though occasional plane noise is present.
Location
Walkable setting in central Ponta Delgada, close to restaurants, shops, the marina, and airport
Vila Nova Hotel is located in a safe, old residential neighborhood in central Ponta Delgada, just an eight-minute drive from the Joao Paulo II Airport and within walking distance from several bars, restaurants, and shops. The Fort of Sao Bras, Military Museum, an ATM, the tourist minibus stop, and the ornate Convent of Our Lady of Peace (Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança) are all within a five-minute walk from the hotel. Travelers can reach the beach in 12 minutes by car, take a 20-minute drive to the 27-hole Batalha Golf Course, or walk 15 minutes to the harbor.
Rooms
Simple and dated rooms with air-conditioning; some have mini-fridges and balconies
The 102 comfortable and spacious rooms have a basic and bit dated design consisting of sturdy wood furniture, blue carpets, curtains, and comforters -- all with different patterns -- and generic artwork. Although the hotel has started upgrading TVs as of early 2017, many are still old tube-style sets. Standard amenities include AC, desks, and safes, though a deposit is required for the latter. Wi-Fi is free, but service can be spotty. Some rooms have balconies, and higher-category rooms include mini-fridges. Expect pump soap dispensers, shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and bidets in the bathrooms.
Junior Suites add a sitting area, while the hotel's Deluxe Suites offer a separate bedroom and living room. Connecting rooms are available on request.
Features
Good coverage of features includes a buffet restaurant, free breakfast, heated outdoor pool, gym, and bar
The Vila Nova Hotel gives guests good coverage of features for recreation and dining. Food options include the Atlantis Restaurant, which serves free continental breakfast featuring local products and long lines at its one coffee machine. Buffet-style dinner presents a spread of local and international dishes. There's a limited menu at the Lobby Bar, and all-day snacks via the vending machines placed on each floor. Room service is also available. The outdoor pool area has a good-sized heated pool and terrace with contemporary loungers and umbrellas, plus drink service.
Guests will also find a lobby TV lounge with large sofas and kids' play area, and a small standing-only internet point. Additionally, there's a game room with pool and foosball tables, curiously set next to a small gym area with a couple of dated cardio and strength-training machines. Business travelers have access to a meeting room with audiovisual capabilities. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but the signal can be spotty. Free overnight shoeshines are available, as is parking for a daily fee.
