Bottom Line

Aria Villas Ubud is a contemporary upscale property consisting of only eight villas next to a small river valley just a 15-minute walk from the center of Ubud. Each stand-alone villa is done in a sleek blend of rustic and urban-chic minimalism, and all have private pools and nice outdoor spaces. Meals, including a free breakfast, are delivered to villas, and perks include free afternoon fresh-fruit popsicles plus free short welcome massages. There are no public spaces here, so travelers who like to interact with other guests may want to look elsewhere. For those who don't mind being a bit farther from the center of town, Wapa di Ume has lovely rooms with terraces and way more on-site features at lower rates.

Scene

Sharp eight-villa property that's best for travelers who like to be on their own

Designed by Singaporean architect Chioh-Hui Goh, this hotel is one of the more chic villa stays in the four-pearl category, though there are very few features on offer. The property consists of eight individual villas with minimalist rustic-modern style throughout. An abundance of recycled wood is used in the details, and everything is intended to blend into the lush jungle setting -- for example, the flat roofs are covered in vines. There's not much in the way of public spaces here, but there is a small lobby with a table and stools and a cushioned bench. Overall, this is a quiet, peaceful place that's especially appealing to honeymooners and couples seeking privacy. Families and groups of friends also come here to make use of the multi-bedroom villas.

Location

Quiet valley location a 15-minute walk from center of Ubud

The hotel is located just off a small, well-maintained road in a small river valley near central Ubud. The property is easy to access, and most taxi drivers will have no trouble finding it. It is a quiet area that's a 15-minute walk from the center of Ubud and the town's restaurants, shops, bars, and galleries. Sights like Ubud Palace and the Museum Puri Lukisan -- which exhibits modern traditional Balinese arts in a lovely, tranquil setting -- are both in the center of town. It's a bit farther to other sights, and a cab ride is likely in order to reach destinations like the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, which is 10 minutes away by car. Ngurah Rai International Airport is a little over an hour's drive away, just outside of Kuta.

Rooms

Rustic, urban-chic villas with private pools and outdoor spaces

The property has eight villas, all with their own private pool and furnished cabana. All are designed to blend into their surroundings, merging indoors and outdoors. The decor makes use of local natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and cork, and features traditional Balinese accents such as carvings and statues. Glazed concrete details give it all a bit of urban-chic polish, and tree-trunk side tables remind guests that they are, in fact, in the middle of Bali's jungles (albeit, a tamed version of those jungles). Bowls of fresh fruit are a nice touch, as are the potted orchids (the same orchids are growing on trees outside!). Modern amenities include flat-screen plasma TVs, free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, safes, minibars, and tea/coffee makers. Large sliding glass doors open up to outdoor areas that are equipped with seating for lounging and dining. Bathrooms have trendy glazed concrete sinks, indoor showers (some outdoors), and outdoor bathtubs. Villas are available with one or three bedrooms, and two can be combined for four bedrooms and two pools. Three- and four-bedroom units are on two levels, with bedrooms on the lower level. Butler service is available

Features

All meals delivered to villas, free shuttle to town, free use of bikes, free passes to fitness center

Despite this hotel's four-pearl status, there are very few features on offer here, which may be disappointing given the nightly rates. All meals are delivered to guest villas, including a free cooked-to-order breakfast. The kitchen's focus is on the use of fresh, local ingredients. A free frozen fruit treat is served each afternoon. Guests who prefer not to walk into town can take the free shuttle or they can use the hotel's bicycles for free. Although there is no fitness center on-site, guests get free passes to the Ubud Fitness Center which is just down the road, and in-room massages can also be booked. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
