Bottom Line

The 191-room Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa is an upscale hotel on Legian Kuta Beach with a modern yet authentic Balinese style and awesome ocean views throughout. Rooms are bright and contemporary, with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning; some have balconies with ocean views, small private pools, or open-air showers. This lushly landscaped property offers two outdoor pools for kids and adults, a beautiful full-service spa, a poolside bar with oceanfront terrace, an Indonesian restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic ocean views. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and outdoor parking are free. Facilities here tend to get crowded -- particularly the pools and restaurant. Guests may also want to consider the Padma Resort Bali at Legian, which is located next door, similarly priced, and offers luxury accommodations.

Scene

A traditional yet stylish hotel with excellent gardens and magnificent ocean views

A classic yet updated Balinese style, as well as a friendly and welcoming atmosphere flow throughout the hotel. Gray tile, wooden ceilings, and lots of tan chairs in small seating areas decorate the lobby. The open air space also has intricate screens, traditional statues and carved wall hangings, as well as free newspapers. The Glow Spa is beautifully decorated with red tile and dark wood floors, white stone walls, a fountain feature, and delicate chandeliers in treatment rooms. Lovely pool and ocean views can be seen from Celagi Restaurant, which has tan tile matched to wood chairs and large carved columns. A wood bar area with a flat-screen TV sits under the thatched roof of the Barong Bar & Sunset Terrace, and on certain nights there is a DJ playing music. Glass and wood carvings along with a terrace showcasing a garden wall adorn the Suling Club Lounge, with blue bench seating and beautiful wood and blue mosaic tile floors throughout. An outdoor seating area has a dark wood deck with tan wicker chairs and wonderful pool views. Other outdoor gathering areas for guests -- mainly tourist couples and families -- include a rooftop terrace with panoramic ocean views, and five acres of well-maintained gardens with plants, flowers, and fountains.

Location

On the beach with restaurants and shops less than a five-minute walk away

The Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa has a central oceanfront location on Legian Kuta Beach with restaurants and shops less than a five-minute walk away. Double Six Beach and Beachwalk shopping center are a 15-minute walk from the hotel, while Seminyak Beach, the Bali Blast Monument, and Kuta Beach are around a 10- to 15-minute drive away. Discovery Shopping Mall, Kuta Square, and Seminyak Square are about 20 minutes' drive, as is Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Rooms

Modern with Balinese teakwood furniture and air-conditioning; some have excellent ocean views

Several different room types are available and include traditional rooms, suites, and cottages. Interconnecting rooms for families are also available. All options are decorated with teakwood furniture, light tile, and dark wood beams in the clean white ceilings. Multicolored bed runners, recessed lighting, and large windows are in the most basic rooms, and there is air-conditioning throughout. The most basic Superior Rooms have flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee facilities, safes, free Wi-Fi, and clean bathrooms with white and gray tile, shower/tub combos or shower stalls, and hotel-brand toiletries. Villas with private pools and lush gardens, rooms with ocean facing balconies, and cottages with outdoor rainfall showers and pebble floors are also available.

Features

Beach access plus two outdoor pools, several restaurant/bars, and a full-service spa

Guests have direct access to a palm-tree lined beach with loungers and umbrellas on the sand. There are two outdoor pools. The lagoon-style main pool -- with fantastic ocean views, kids' area with sand, waterslides, and splash pad -- has a swim-up bar, cabanas, and plenty of deck seating. The gorgeous infinity pool and hot tub are both adults-only. Indonesian and international cuisine is offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Celagi Restaurant. Snacks, cocktails, beer, and pizza are served at Barong Bar & Sunset Terrace. Breakfast at either Celagi or Parasol Restaurant is included, and offers egg and pancake stations, though can be quite crowded. Hand and foot therapy, as well as facials, massages, and an outdoor shower are provided at the full-service Glow Spa. The Suling Club Lounge has tea, coffee, ice cream, fruit, cocktails, and pastries, in addition to afternoon tea and a cocktail hour. Only certain rooms have access to the Suling Club Lounge, though. A free kids' club and free Balinese craft lessons are offered on-site, as is 24-hour room service.
