Bottom Line

Beji Ubud Resort is a mid-range vacation complex set in well-tended tropical gardens. There are five pools, three of which have infinity edges and excellent views of the jungle valley. Rooms are clean and modern and include some lovely traditionally styled Balinese huts, though units near the road can pick up traffic noise. While certainly far from the most impressive hotel of its kind, it provides good-value lodgings in pleasant tropical surrounds and is within easy reach of Ubud's attractions.

Scene

Tourist hotel with unattractive entrance, but expansive and well-tended tropical gardens

A potholed road and rather shabby entrance hardly inspires much confidence in the Beji Ubud Resort that lies beyond. However, while far from deluxe, the hotel's open-air reception has a pleasantly unassuming and rustic vibe, with fresh flowers and carved wood furnishings. The resort is composed of a mix of traditional grass-roofed Balinese lumbung huts and modern concrete buildings that are dotted throughout sprawling but well-tended gardens full of lush jungle vegetation and the occasional monkey. There are gorgeous water features throughout the Beji Ubud Resort ("beji" means wellspring), including five swimming pools. Streams run through the property to a river below, where locals bathe and collect water for ceremonies. The tropical grounds feel particularly spacious and have plenty of pool terraces for vacationing families with kids as well as secluded spots for couples looking to enjoy a little privacy.

Location

Off a busy road on the outskirts of Ubud, a five-minute drive into town

The hotel is located just off the busy Sangingan Road between Ubud, Bali's major arts hub, and the village of Kedewatan. Central Ubud, full of restaurants, craft shops, and art galleries, is a five-minute drive away. There are also a few cafes and eateries within walking distance, and the well-known Neka Art Museum is just a few minutes away on foot. Bali's main Ngurah Rai International Airport is an hour away by car, while Denpasar city center takes around 40 minutes to reach.

Rooms

Air-conditoned rooms with clean and modern interiors and simple Balinese touches

The resort features a mix of traditional two-story Balinese lumbung huts and simpler, more modern low-rise buildings. Interiors are all clean and modern, with polished tile floors, white linen drapes, and a mix of wood and wicker furniture along with a few traditional Balinese decorative pieces. In-room amenities include mini-fridges, kettles, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Bathrooms vary, but most have showers that aren't separated from the main bathroom area. Some units also have rainfall showerheads and/or separate soaking tubs. While all the lodging is air-conditioned, past guests have complained that keeping the units cool can be a challenge. Some of the huts near the road suffer from traffic noise.

Features

Five swimming pools, most with jungle views, plus massage, yoga, and free breakfast and Wi-Fi

The hotel's restaurant serves a free buffet breakfast with plenty of hotel and cold Indonesian and international options. Lunch and dinner are also served a la carte and there's a happy hour every day. While the restaurant is pleasant and has lots of covered outdoor seating in pavilions with beautiful jungle views, the resort's main draw is it's numerous pools. There are five pools in all -- including three infinity pools -- and most offer lovely jungle views (although some lack lounge chairs). The hotel can also organize private yoga classes, massage treatments, and even romantic dinners down by the river. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, although it can be patchy in rooms.
