Bottom Line

Desamuda Village is a three-pearl hotel located in downtown Seminyak, amid great dining, shopping, and nightlife options. However, it's a 20-minute walk from Seminyak Beach. The hotel features 28 rooms ranging from affordably priced one-bedroom suites to private pool villas. All feature clean and bright interiors, while villa compounds have an open-plan design plus plunge pools, kitchens, living rooms, and elegant semi open-air bathrooms. Though mostly well maintained, the style is somewhat dated. Facilities are decent for a hotel in this price range and include two swimming pools and a reasonably priced restaurant, but no spa. Guests who'd prefer to stay closer to the beach may want to check out Samaja Beachside Villas instead, where rates are similar but features are even more limited.

Scene

A quiet and laid back family-friendly hotel for travelers who prefer central spots over direct beach access

Desamuda Village is a laid back small-scale hotel with a family-friendly vibe. There are plenty of common areas to relax throughout the property, both indoors and by the pool. Although located in downtown Seminyak, the hotel feels far removed from the area's hustle and bustle, and the setting is tranquil. The facilities and pathways are lined with dense tropical greenery, tall trees, palms, and flowering frangipani. There are two swimming pools and plenty of lounge chairs laid out, so the pools rarely get crowded. A smaller freeform pool adjoins the restaurant and has a nice setting, with a large natural stone patio, manicured gardens, and rock water features. It is worth noting that the villas here don't feel as secluded and private when compared to many other all-villa hotels in Seminyak. Overall the ambience throughout the property is more family oriented, and those looking for easy walks to the beach may want to look elsewhere.

Location

In downtown Seminyak, a 10-minute walk from Eat Street and 20 minutes to Seminyak Beach

Desamuda is located on a small quiet laneway off of Jalan Raya Bonkasa in downtown Seminyak. There are numerous dining, shopping, and nightlife options all around. Additionally, the hotel is only a 10-minute walk from Eat Street, which is one of Seminyak's most happening neighborhoods. It's packed with great dining options, funky cafes, happening bars, and boutiques. If you're looking for a beachy trip, though, you'll have to keep in mind that it's quite a long walk from the hotel. Expect strolls of up to 20 minutes to reach Seminyak Beach, which is a bit more relaxed than neighboring Kuta Beach. It's great for surfing, swimming, or just lounging. The beach is lined with oceanfront restaurants and beach clubs, which are consistently packed during sunset hours. Kuta Beach, Waterbom Bali, and the airport are around a 25- to 30-minute drive from the hotel, though traffic can be bad in this part of Bali.

Rooms

Rooms and villas with bright decor plus flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning; villas feature private pools

Rooms here range from affordably priced one-bedroom suites to one- to four-bedroom villas with private pools. All are bright and airy, and everything is impeccably clean (if starting to look just a touch dated). The white walls are sparsely decorated with colorful paintings and the wooden doors, trim, and furniture feature intricate carvings and ornamentation. Most rooms are outfitted with canopy beds, comfy sofas, desks and chairs, and roomy wardrobes. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, free Wi-Fi, safes, mini-fridges, and free toiletries. Villas feature an open layout and compounds feature plunge pools surrounded by tropical greenery. Spacious living rooms and kitchens come standard, and the latter are outfitted with stovetop burners, full-sized refrigerators, toasters, kettles, and water dispensers. En-suite bathrooms are modern, spacious, and bright, with light colored ceramic tiles throughout. Bathrooms in most room types have small vanities with porcelain sinks and large mirrors, glassed off shower cubicles, and deep soaking tubs. Some villas also add outdoor rainfall showers.

Features

Two swimming pools with plenty of seating, a reasonably priced restaurant, and free Wi-Fi

Desamuda Village has limited on-site facilities, though for a hotel in this price range what's on offer is nice to have. The hub of activity throughout the day is concentrated around the two common swimming pools, though it rarely feels crowded, as there is plenty of room to stretch out and enough seating. The main pool is a great size for laps and the smaller freeform pool is surrounded by tropical greenery, making for a nice laid-back setting. Rice Table restaurant is housed under a thatched roof and the menu includes both Western and Indonesian dishes. The prices are reasonable, but previous guests only give the food mixed reviews. A buffet breakfast is included in most room packages, though the spread is limited and usually only includes coffee and tea, fresh fruit, an egg station, and baked goods. There is no spa, but beauty and massage treatments are available as in-room services. A free shuttle service operates to downtown Seminyak and Kuta, but is based on availability and guests have to pre-book. There is plenty of on-site parking and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
