Bottom Line

Dwaraka The Royal Villas is an upscale boutique hotel located outside of the artsy town of Ubud, about a 25-minute walk from the property. All 10 units here are elegant and fantastically decorated with Javanese-influenced furniture and have gorgeous outdoor showers that resemble stone fountains. Amenities include a lovely infinity pool surrounded by foliage, an adjacent spa with elegantly painted treatment rooms, and a predominantly raw cuisine restaurant -- Yashoda Kitchen -- where a free breakfast is served every morning. Other perks include free afternoon tea and cookies, free loaner bicycles and mobile phones, and free Wi-Fi. However, there's no fitness center. Travelers may want to compare rates and amenities at Plataran Ubud Hotel & Spa, which is on a main shopping street and walkable to the Sacred Monkey Forest.

Scene

Small, romantic boutique property catering to couples

Dwaraka The Royal Villas is a small, romantic, and upscale property situated on lush, tropical grounds. The open-air lobby features gorgeous tile on the floors, beautiful hand-painted statues, doorways, and furniture, and a cozy, casual seating area set off to the side. Big bowls of orange marigolds add even more color to the already vibrant space. This hotel primarily caters to couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic and relaxing getaway.

Location

Quiet location just north of the center of Ubud, in an area surrounded by residences and other hotels

Dwaraka The Royal Villas is located in a quiet neighborhood in the northern outskirts of Ubud, an inland town known for its numerous artists and spas, thriving New Age expat community, yoga studios, and health food restaurants. The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood due north of the town center, with a fair amount of residences and similar hotels in the immediate area. Getting to the Saraswati Temple and the main market requires about six minutes in a car or 25 minutes on foot. The Monkey Forest is about 10 minutes by car, as are the Yoga Barn and the Agung Rai Museum of Art. Getting to Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport takes around an hour by car. The journey to Denpasar city center takes about an hour, traffic permitting.

Rooms

Huge, luxurious rooms and suites with ornate Javanese furniture and lovely outdoor showers

Rooms at Dwaraka are all luxurious -- and huge. The smallest are the two Royal Suites, which measure 60 square meters (646 square feet), while the largest option is the Puri Taman Sukawati, a standalone royal house that measures a full 550 square meters (5,920 square feet) and looks more like a temple than anything else. It's decorated with gorgeous and ornate Javanese gold-work decorating the pillars, walls, and ceilings. It features three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. While there is some variety in decor across room types, guests can expect ornate, Javanese-style dark-wood furniture with gold-hued accents (including canopy beds with sheer drapes). Standard amenities include free minibars (stocked daily), coffee- and tea-making facilities, a free basket of daily fruit, free afternoon tea and cookies, and flat-screen TVs with DVD players. Bathrooms feature natural toiletries, robes, and slippers. Gorgeous outdoor showers look more like fountains than places to get clean, thanks to gorgeously sculpted exteriors and lots of tropical foliage. Some rooms have private outdoor pools.

Features

Gorgeous pool surrounded by greenery, beautifully decorated spa, and restaurant with free breakfast

This hotel offers excellent amenities, starting with a stunning, partially shaded infinity pool with a mosaic base and lots of tropical foliage surrounding it. Right by the pool is a gorgeous spa -- Radha -- which offers all sorts of massages and treatments in beautifully painted rooms featuring ornate doorways and lots of tile work. Dining takes place at the Yashoda Kitchen, which serves a free breakfast along with a la carte international cuisine making heavy use of raw ingredients at lunch and dinner. The hotel also offers plenty of activities, from free loaner bikes to private yoga, dance, and cooking classes. Loaner mobile phones are also available for guests, free of charge, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
