The 136-room Fontana Hotel Bali is an upscale property with minimalist, contemporary interiors and an emphasis on art -- hallways throughout the property are lined with artwork, and the stylish, modern rooms are also adorned with art pieces. Minibars stocked with free goodies, coffee and tea facilities, free Wi-Fi, and lovely walk-in rainfall showers are just some of the in-room perks, plus there’s a hip cafe on-site that brews artisan coffee, as well as an Italian restaurant. The spa offers a wide range of treatments and includes a hair salon, but the fitness center is small and has limited machines. The hotel’s outdoor pool is set in a pretty courtyard surrounded by lush tropical greenery and padded loungers, but the area unfortunately does not get much sun throughout the day. The location of the property is a bit out of the way of tourist attractions, shopping, and the beach, however, but the hotel does offer a free area shuttle. Travelers seeking something closer to the beach might want to consider the Padma Resort Legian or Legian Beach Hotel instead.
Scene
Modern hotel with stylish interiors and lots of artwork throughout
The Fontana Hotel Bali is a modern, minimalist property with pleasant contemporary interiors and an emphasis on art -- the hallways' white walls are lined with artwork. Guests are greeted in a modern lobby where industrial concrete columns and walls are covered with rustic wooden paneling and the black tiled floor is speckled with white floral designs. A sleek black marble front desk sits opposite a black tufted sofa, while the high ceiling, large windows, and open-air entrance lend an air of spaciousness and fill the room with natural light. The stylish Portabella Lounge adjoins the lobby, with a bar flanked by simple bar stools, geometric black-and-white tile flooring, and a long sofa festooned with pillows stretching the length of the space and offering sunlit seating by the windows.
Elsewhere in the hotel’s restaurant, concrete and glossy marble is replaced with lots of wood for a cozy and hip feel -- homey wooden floorboards are paired with wooden tables and mismatched chairs, wine bottles are stocked in large wooden shelving, and all sorts of curiosities are displayed in glass-faced cases on the wall salon-style. The on-site cafe also has a cool, hipster vibe and could easily be mistaken for a Brooklyn coffee shop, with a steampunk-meets-mid-century modern style. Old books and other knickknacks line the shelves, bright yellow chairs clustered around a tiny table sit alongside velvet stools, black chandeliers dangle from above, and two iMacs are available for guests’ use. Plus, there’s patio furniture on a wooden deck outside surrounded by greenery.
The hotel has lovely, lush grounds that include a pretty pool area skirted in tropical greenery and palm trees and a lovely wooden deck with padded loungers and parasols. Though rich with verdant blooms that create an oasis-like atmosphere, the pool is in the shade most of the day and does not get much sunshine.
Location
Out of the way location, not within walking distance of the beach
The hotel is located in a fairly quiet area, with a few other hotels nearby as well as several restaurants and shops. The location isn’t ideal however, as it’s a bit out of the way of main tourist areas and the beach, though the hotel does offer a free area shuttle. Legian Beach is under a ten-minute drive, while Seminyak Beach is around a 15-minute drive. Seminyak Square is a 17-minute drive away, while Kuta’s center is about 10 minutes away and the Mal Bali Galeria can also be reached in 10 minutes. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is 25 minutes away.
Rooms
Stylish, modern rooms with private balconies, minibars with free treats, and large walk-in rainfall showers
Rooms are spacious and pleasant, with contemporary furnishings that include light wood furniture, lots of natural light courtesy of glass sliding doors that open onto private balconies (though these are not furnished), and a soft, neutral color palette; decor varies a bit between the different room types. Deluxe and Superior Rooms, for example, feature large beige and wood headboards framing beds topped in crisp white linens, while the Suite is adorned with darker colors -- black tufted sofas and seating match black furniture like a sleek coffee table, while black tile floors are accented by a mustard yellow area rug. White walls are decorated with pieces of modern art. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free minibars, coffee- and tea-making facilities, electronic safes, fluffy bathrobes and slippers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are modern, covered in large brown tiles and have spacious walk-in rainfall showers, plus Suites have soaking tubs as well. Family Rooms are also available and can sleep up to four.
Features
Hip cafe, stylish Italian restaurant, full-service spa with hair salon, small fitness center, and lovely, though shaded, outdoor pool
Portabella Bistro is a stylish restaurant serving Italian dishes with an emphasis on seafood, plus it has a relaxed lounge bar by the lobby. A free buffet breakfast is included in the room rates and room service is available 24/7. There’s also a hip cafe, Sunny 16 Cafe, which is a popular spot that attracts locals and guests alike; it's open 24/7 and brews artisan coffee, and also offers fresh juices and an array of desserts. There are two iMac computers available for guests’ use.
The hotel’s Suma Spa offers an extensive list of treatments and includes a hair salon, plus there’s a small fitness center, though it only has a handful of machines and equipment. The lovely outdoor pool is skirted in lush greenery and palm trees, and is surrounded by a wooden sundeck with comfortable, padded loungers, but the area does not get much sun throughout the day and guests complain of the constant shade and cool water temperature. Business travelers and guests seeking event space can choose from three elegant meeting rooms outfitted with A/V equipment. Wi-Fi is free throughout, as is parking.
