Bottom Line

Green Field Hotel and Bungalows is a mid-range vacation resort popular with artistic and spiritually minded travelers set in tranquil gardens just south of Ubud. While many guests will relish the opportunity to enjoy the particularly picturesque surroundings without the distraction of TVs, the simplicity of the rooms might not be to everyone's taste. Features include two pools (including a saltwater pool) and a free breakfast of western and Indonesian fare. Overall, although some older rooms are in need of a revamp, the resort is a good option for those who want a quiet and affordable -- though not particularly luxurious -- home away from home in Ubud.

Green Field Hotel and Bungalows

Scene

Former art studio set in peaceful gardens with beautiful rice field views

The Green Field Hotel and Bungalows first opened as a simple art studio around 30 years ago, but the owner -- a Balinese painter and Hindu priest -- expanded the complex into what is now considered one of the more authentic Balinese hotels in the area. The property is set in pleasant and well-tended grounds full of tropical plants, golden statues, and lotus ponds. Despite its close proximity to a busy road, the property feels worlds away from busy Ubud town nearby.  A new section was added in 2014 and, while the extension is fresh and modern, it lacks the character and charm of some of the original parts of the hotel. The rice paddies around the hotel also belong to the proprietor, whose continued insistence on no further developments ensures that the Green Field will continue to have some of the best natural views in town for years to come.

Location

Just off a busy road in south Ubud, a 10-minute walk from Monkey Forest

The hotel is located just off a busy tourist street in the south of Ubud, Bali's cultural and spa capital. There are numerous shops and restaurants close by and the bus station -- with connections to all over Bali -- is just across the street. Ubud's famous Monkey Forest is less than 10 minutes away on foot, while the bustling town center is about 15 minutes, or a five-minute ride in the hotel's free shuttle. Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport is around an hour away by car, while Denpasar city center is about 45 minutes by road.

Rooms

Mix of rooms with limited amenities and balconies or terraces, some with rice paddy views

The hotel offers a mix of new and older rooms -- many of which could use a renovation (or at least some new bed linens). The newer lodgings offer fresh, modern decor, carved wood furnishings, and original art pieces, some painted by the owner himself. While all rooms are air-conditioned, they are unusually light on amenities and lack TVs and safes. Bathrooms are modern and well-maintained, and some even include whirlpool tubs and separate walk-in showers. All rooms extend to furnished terraces or balconies; many of those on the second floor have lovely views over the adjacent rice paddies.

Features

Two swimming pools, painting classes, and traditional purification rituals

The property has two attractive pool terraces, one with a large main pool and the other with a saltwater pool overlooking the rice fields, a particular favorite with guests during sunset. A set breakfast with items such as fruit, eggs, pancakes, and local dishes is included in the room rates, while western and Indonesian dishes are available a la carte for lunch and dinner. A free shuttle service is provided to the center of Ubud at any time of day and tours can be arranged to travel further afield. A spa area also offers a range of massage treatments and the hotel arranges traditional Balinese healing and purification rituals as well as painting classes. Recent guests report newly installed and allegedly fast Wi-Fi throughout the property.
