Quiet vibe won't please those seeking a bigger resort
The four-pearl Klumpu Bali Resort is one of Sanur's most charming boutique properties. Down a quiet lane off of Sanur's main tourist strip, the hotel's eight lumbung-style villas are tucked into lovely gardens. Interiors include elegant Balinese decor and each unit features perks like turndown service, free and fast Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and spacious patios. A free afternoon tea service is a delight, as are the free 15-minute welcome massages in the spa cabana. The hotel also has a small restaurant (serving a generous, free breakfast) and a fleet of free bikes, plus a lovely garden pool. There aren't many options like it in town, but travelers wanting to spend a little less while gaining beach proximity could check out Respati Beach Hotel instead, though it lacks the Balinese atmosphere here.
Scene
Authentic, attractive, and intimate boutique property with a laid-back atmosphere
There's a lot to like about the Klumpu Bali Resort. It's an authentically crafted and charming place that executes traditional Balinese style with elegance, which is a treat in a town where "traditional" is often code for "worn and dated." Instead, the husband-and-wife duo who own and manage this small property have created a hotel that's lovingly kept, where guests spend long afternoons around the tranquil pool. That relaxed vibe starts right away, as the staff usher new arrivals to a table in the hotel's restaurant, where they are treated to a cool towel, cold drink, and a local sweet. It's a perfectly fitting, and unobtrusively comforting, welcome to this boutique-size property. The atmosphere is entirely low-key, and the only sounds you're likely to hear are the occasional bird and rooster, the sound of falling water, and a few of the hotel's more mature crowd lazily paddling in the pool. During our stay, the laid-back afternoon tea service was a favorite among guests, and it was especially delightful when taken on villa patios or poolside.
Location
Under a 10-minute walk to the beach, on a quiet street off Sanur's main drag
This hotel's location is good for those who want to feel like they've stumbled upon a secret, as the residential area around the hotel is incredibly quiet and almost hidden. For more action, Jalan Danau Tamblingan is less than five minutes away on foot, and is lined with casual bars, restaurants, and tourist shops. The beach is an eight-minute walk from the hotel thanks to a shortcut between Parigata Resort and Maya Sanur. A 10-minute walk in the other direction along Jalan Danau Tamblingan leads to even more local warungs and cafes -- some of which look lifted right out of style-conscious Brooklyn. The Sindhu Night Market -- a great stop for authentic local eats -- is only an eight-minute cab ride away. Expect a 25-minute drive to the airport, though that time will vary depending on traffic.
Rooms
Spacious lumbung-style villas with lots of extras, modern bathrooms, and large patios
The lumbung-style villas here are carefully crafted so that bedding down inside of one of Bali's most recognizable traditional structures doesn't mean sacrificing modern comforts. The insulated bamboo roofs and thick walls keep any noise to a minimum, and unexpected high-end perks make a stay here refined rather than rustic. That starts with the decor, which is a sharp take on traditional Balinese style. Expect to see polished marble floors, hardwood furniture with elegant carvings, traditional wooden sculptures, colorful knick-knacks, fresh flowers, and rich silk fabrics all working together to create an appealing atmosphere.
Features include fruit baskets upon arrival plus powerful air-conditioning, fast and free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and movie libraries, kitchenettes with stovetops, water coolers, minibars, wardrobes, and seating areas. The evening turndown service is an unexpected extra, and the pillow-top mattresses are firm, but comfy, and dressed in spotless white linens. Each villa has a patio with table and sofa seating, plus a fan to combat Bali's heat. Half of the rooms have lofts with extra beds, and can hold up to five people. Bathrooms are fresh, modern, and spacious, with large walk-in showers, huge vanities with dual sinks, and generous toiletries.
Features
Lovely little pool, spa cabana, and simple restaurant, plus free bikes, airport transfers, and Wi-Fi
Given its compact size, it's no surprise that features are limited here, though what's on offer is on par (or exceeds) much of what's provided at other hotels in town. Of course, many guests can be found lounging around the freeform pool, which sits in the middle of the property and has two shallower areas. This creates a leisurely social vibe that's a highlight for those staying here. There are plenty of lounge chairs for shaded or sunny seating. The restaurant serves a free a la carte breakfast as well as lunch and dinner. An afternoon tea service is a delight, and can be taken in the restaurant, around the pool, or on the villas' patios. It includes your choice of tea or coffee plus a local cake. The hotel also has an airy spa cabana for massages (a voucher for a free 15-minute massage is given upon arrival), and a large fleet of bicycles that are free for guests to use. These are especially handy for getting to the beach. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and free airport transfers are included in rates.
