Bottom Line

The 27-room Kuta Angel Hotel is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel filled with unique artwork that’s a five-minute walk to Kuta's beaches. Spacious and stylish rooms have simple, neutral decor, along with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and glassed-in showers with rainfall showerheads. However, some rooms lack windows and receive street noise. Special chocolate-based treatments are available at the on-site spa, and there is a small outdoor pool plus an on-site restaurant/bar that serves a continental breakfast. Guests looking for a larger property with a fitness center should compare rates at Kuta Town House Apartments, where many units have full kitchens as well.

Scene

Contemporary hotel with unique artwork throughout

The brick exterior of this hotel is adorned in several carvings of angels and heavenly beings, a motif that's a bit gaudy when compared to the straightforward, modern design elements that flow through this hotel. The artistic carvings are done by the owner, who is a local jewelry designer, and a glass display case in the lobby houses jewelry pieces for sale. Soft, neutral armchairs, fresh flowers, and tan marble floors decorate the compact lobby, and a large sun sculpture hangs over the front desk. Angel's Heaven Spa is a stylish space, with peaked wood ceilings and treatment rooms offer brown patterned blankets and large marble soaking tubs. Amorphous wood ribs create a striking ceiling in the Angel Essence Restaurant, with tan wicker chairs providing seating that opens onto a street-side terrace. Stainless steel stools and gray granite countertops line the bar area. There is also an outdoor pool, though it's more of a place to cool off than socialize and relax as there is extremely limited seating and it's tiny. The hotel mostly draws couples on romantic holidays, though families and solo travelers pass through as well.

Location

Prime downtown location -- walk to the beach in five minutes

The Kuta Angel Hotel is on a busy street in downtown Kuta with restaurants and shops are just out the front door, while Kuta Square and Kuta Beach are a five-minute walk away. The Bali Blast Monument, Kuta Art Market, and Waterbom Park are around a 10-minute walk, while the Mall Bali Galeria, Beachwalk, and Discovery Shopping Mall are within a 15-minute walk. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 10-minute drive away while Legian Beach is 15-minutes wawy by car. Although central, the street becomes packed on nights and weekends, making it difficult to drive.

Rooms

Clean and stylish with rainfall showerheads and swirling artwork

Modern rooms all have jewel-inspired category names like Sapphire and Ruby, a first gesture at setting the spaces here apart from other hotels throughout Bali. Interiors, though, are largely similar despite the room category, and comparatively neutral when considered against the artful details in the hotel's public areas. Gray area rugs add softness to white tile floors while curling lattice work panels appear throughout, most notably on the mirrored walls behind the beds' padded headboards. Flat-screen TVs are mounted above tan desks while neutral benches provide seating. Electric kettles and free bottled water sit on tan marble countertops while minibars are tucked inside light wood furniture. All rooms are air-conditioned, safes, and free Wi-Fi, though some rooms lack windows or suffer loud street noise. Tan marble bathrooms have large vanities and glassed-in showers with rainfall showerheads. We didn't love the pump dispenser for soap that's mounted in the showers, though higher category bookings like Diamond Rooms offer soaking tubs plus bathrobes and slipper.

Features

On-site spa, restaurant, and bar plus small outdoor pool

The hotel offers many features on par with other three- and four-pearl properties in the area. The Angel’s Heaven Spa, which specializes in aromatic chocolate oil massages, has body scrubs and mani/pedis. Decent local cuisine is served for lunch and dinner at Angel’s Essence Restaurant and bebek tutu (Balinese smoked duck) is often featured. The attached bar has daily happy hours with cocktails, beer, and coffee, and the hotel serves a continental breakfast, but it costs extra and the options are limited. Distinctive stone walls surround the narrow outdoor pool, which has a couple of lounge chairs at one end and a fountain flowing into it, though the pool is in the shade most of the day. Both the business center and concierge services are offered 24/7, and there is room service, but is has limited hours. There is no fitness center and airport transportation costs extra. Babysitting services are available as well.
