Bottom Line

The Oasis Kuta is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in downtown Kuta, less than a 10-minute walk to the beach. The 70 rooms are spacious, but basic, and feature balconies, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs, though maintenance and upkeep can be a problem. The long lap pool is this hotel's prized feature, and is surrounded by a tropical garden with tall palms and flowering frangipani. Other facilities a small spa and a restaurant and bar, though almost everything except for the pool look at bit run down. As an alternative, the Bali Garden Beachside Resort has more traditional Balinese character, beach frontage, and extensive facilities, and lush tropical gardens, but expect to pay far more. In fact, low rates are what draw most guests to the Oasis in the first place.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Oasis Kuta

Scene

Underwhleming hotel attracts budget-conscious partiers, with modern -- but run down -- interiors

As the hotel is located in downtown Kuta, within distance of the nightclub district along Legian Street, it tends to attracts plenty of guests who are in town to party and enjoy Kuta's beach culture. It's worth noting that the hotel is often full of rowdy late-night party goers, so families looking for a quiet hotel may want to look elsewhere. That being said, the hotel is set off the road a bit and picks up less traffic noise than other hotels nearby, so depending on where you're sleeping and who your neighbors are, your stay here might be quieter. The style is pleasantly modern, though unremarkable, with a mix of basic furniture and a few Balinese touches. However, public areas like the restaurant are quite run down and worn. The hotel's centerpiece is its huge, tranquil garden pool that's mostly calm and uncrowded -- at least during the day, before the partying starts. Rates here are a bargain for the area, so travelers who are unfussy and budget-conscious make up most of the clientele.

Location

In downtown Kuta, within a 10-minute walk of Kuta Beach, Waterbom Bali, and Legian Street

The Oasis Kuta is located down a quiet lane off of busy Bakung Sari Street in downtown Kuta. The location is strategic, as it's less than a 10-minute walk from most of the popular attractions in the area, including Waterbom Bali and the nightlife scene along Legian Street. There are also ATMs, 24-hour convenience stores, money changers, and handicraft stores right in front of the hotel. Kuta Beach, a five- to 10-minute walk away (depending on your destination), is consistently crowded, but the forgiving sand-bottom break along this stretch of coastline is perfect for novice surfers. There are plenty of vendors along the beach offering lessons or board rentals. As a transit hotel, The Oasis Kuta is convenient to the airport, which is just a 15-minute drive away. Guests should take note that the hotel sign is tiny and can be easily missed. An easier landmark to spot is the Royal Singosari Kuta across the road.

Rooms

Spacious, relatively modern rooms, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, but poor Wi-Fi and upkeep

Rooms are spacious (32 square meters/344 square feet) and feature reasonably modern interiors with plain off-white walls and gray cement floor tiles. Bold accent walls add a little color, as do surf-centric canvases. Furniture consists of light wood veneer flat-box pieces, and a bit of bench seating. It's a minimalistic style that would be pleasant if it weren't for visible wear (like water-warped walls) and maintenance issues.

Both room types are identical in layout and features, though ground floor rooms are closer to the pool. All rooms feature balconies with seating and views of the pool. Amenities are decent, and include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, safes, and free mineral water. However, coffee- and tea-making facilities, desks, and reliable Wi-Fi are all absent. Other issues may include non-working air-conditioning and limited hot water. Thankfully, there's a decent amount of storage space.

Unfortunately, you get what you pay for here, and guests frequently comment on the poor level of cleanliness as well as musty smelling bathrooms. Bathrooms are small, though not cramped, and there are separate rooms for the shower section and the toilet/vanity area. Limited toiletries are provided.

Features

Lovely garden pool, a small spa, restaurant and bar, and free Wi-Fi in common areas

The best aspect of The Oasis Kuta is the hotel's strategic location and the lovely pool in center of the property. The latter is set in a tropical garden setting and has plenty of lounge chairs for relaxing in the shade or sun. However, while the pool is lovely (and calm for most of the day), the other facilities on offer look tired and are poorly maintained, showing moldy ceilings, and peeling paint. The restaurant menu consists of both Asian and Western dishes, and the bar offers daily happy hour cocktail specials. Tirta Spa offers a range of beauty and massage treatments, and has treatment tables, mani/pedi chairs, and a deep soaking tub, all of which are located in one room with just curtains to section spaces off. The spa is dark and gloomy, smells musty, and doesn't feel very private. There's a borrowing bookshelf in the lobby, and a desktop computer and printer. Wi-Fi is free, but spotty, though the signal is best in common areas. On-site parking is available, but limited.
