Bottom Line

The 18-room Ubud Bungalow is a budget hotel located right in the middle of downtown Ubud, a six-minute walk from the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. This is a quiet, peaceful place with humble, traditional style plus beautiful gardens and a lovely outdoor pool. Superior Rooms -- of which there are only four -- have air-conditioning and mini-fridges, but Standard Rooms are un-air-conditioned and bare bones -- none have TVs. All have nice terraces or balconies with garden views, but having to leave windows open for air means noise in rooms near the road. Breakfast is free and includes dishes like pancakes and eggs plus fresh fruit or juice. Check out the Tegal Sari as well. It's another budget option in town, but it's popular and frequently needs to be booked at least six months ahead.

Scene

Quiet, peaceful place in the middle of downtown

Although it's in downtown Ubud, this hotel is a lovely property full of lush tropical greenery, trees, and flowers. Once they step off the busy street and enter the property, guests find a quiet, peaceful place with stone pathways and many Balinese statues. While first impressions are lovely, this is a budget property, and the style throughout is humble and traditional. Check-in takes place seated at a wooden desk in the open-air lobby. A couple of benches provide a place to sit, but aside from the pool there's not a whole lot in the way of space to socialize. The hotel is most popular with European and Australian couples looking for affordable rooms in a central location, but families, groups of friends, and solo travelers also make their way here for the hotel's low rates.

Location

Central downtown location close to Monkey Forest

The hotel is located right in the middle of Monkey Forest Road in downtown Ubud. The road is well-maintained, but it can get quite congested with traffic from tour buses. The hotel is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and galleries, and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a five-minute walk away. Ubud Palace can be reached in 15 minutes on foot, and there are plenty of art galleries and museums nearby, including Museum Puri Lukisan, which is also a 15-minute walk from the hotel. One of the more popular things to do in Ubud is the Campuhan Ridge Walk, the trailhead of which starts about a 20-minute walk from the hotel (10 minutes away by taxi). Ngurah Rai International Airport is a little over an hour's drive southwest of the hotel.

Rooms

Simple, traditional rooms with terraces or balconies; only Superior Rooms have air-conditioning

The rooms here aren't the typical tricked-out Balinese villas found all around Ubud, but that fact helps keep rates low, which is a major reason guests make their way to this budget hotel. The look is simple and traditional, with tiled floors; heavy, wooden furniture; mostly bare walls; and no in-room seating. Ornate wood carvings do add a bit of local charm, and Superior Rooms have a token piece of bright tropical art on the walls. Some rooms are done with woven-bamboo walls and have towering pagoda ceilings. Otherwise, everything is rather spartan, but clean and mostly well-kept. Rooms closer to the road may pick up noise from the busy street outside.

Most units are Standard Rooms and have no air-conditioning, only ceiling fans. Four Superior Room are a bit more modern and have air-conditioning and mini-fridges (which are in bathrooms in some rooms). Rooms have no TVs, and though there is free Wi-Fi it can be spotty. Bathrooms are reasonably spacious though most are showing their age, with stains and chipped tile. Standard Room bathrooms have shower/tub combos without shower curtains while Superior Rooms have walk-in showers. There's limited counter space in Standard Room bathrooms as well. Toiletries -- limited to shampoo, shower gel, and soap -- come in large eco-friendly bottles. Nice terraces and balconies are surrounded by lush tropical greenery and stone pathways -- they offer the only place to sit in every room aside from the bed.

Features

Free breakfast and lovely outdoor pool

The hotel doesn't have much in the way of features, but its central downtown location means most everything is close by. A free breakfast is served daily in an open-air thatched-roof pavilion. Options generally include things like pancakes and eggs plus fresh fruit or juices. No other meals are served on-site. The lovely outdoor pool is surrounded by tropical greenery, flowers, and a stone deck and wall. Padded lounge chairs invite relaxation by the pool, and trees provide shade. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, though doesn't always work that well. Laundry services can be arranged and the hotel can help with excursions and local recommendations.
