Bottom Line

The 760-room Ambassador Hotel Bangkok is a huge, mid-range hotel divided between a renovated tower and an unrenovated one. The Sukhumvit location is attractive, within five minutes of the Nana BTS and in the prime center of the Soi 11 party district. This property offers renovated rooms with electric kettles, minibars, and bathrooms with mosaic tiles, but some yet-to-be-renovated rooms are not as attractive and have inconsistent Internet or air-conditioning. Privilege level rooms, housed in the Tower Wing, may be worth the extra price. There are several restaurants and bars, a large outdoor pool, a garden that's home to a wide variety of birds, and a hair salon with a private room for Muslim women. While Wi-Fi is free and there is a spa on-site with a steam room and hot tub, guests should expect the possibility of solicitation in the lobby, with an on-site club called Climax located in the basement. Travelers might want to comparison shop with other mid-range hotels like Budacco or Le Fenix Sukhumvit.

Ambassador Hotel Bangkok

Scene

Mammoth, partially renovated property with some outdated and seedy elements

Built in the '80s, the Ambassador Hotel Bangkok is a huge property created to be full-service with a mini mall, restaurants, and exercise facilities all on-site. While the lobby is rather grandiose, with marble parquet tiling and big glass chandeliers, hallway carpeting harkens from decades ago and the concrete tiling in outdoor areas such as the patio garden and pool is on the crumbling side. The tower block of the hotel holds renovated rooms, which have been freshened up and include modern amenities. While this property has a long list of seemingly appealing features, overall it is a bit dated and has a somewhat seedy element, especially after dark when the nightclub, Climax, in the basement is open and solicitation may occur in the lobby.

Location

In the heart of the Sukhumvit party district, within the Soi 11 neighborhood

Sukhumvit is often called the heart of Bangkok, and the Ambassador happens to be right in the center of the commercial party district with an extensive network of bars, clubs, and restaurants in the surrounding streets. Soi Cowboy is just under 15 minutes away on foot, with old standbys such as Q Bar a five-minute walk away and megaclubs such as Levels even closer. While the area, and the hotel itself, may have a somewhat seedy feeling after dark, the neighborhood is so well-traveled as to be considered relatively safe. The airport is a little over an hour on public transportation via the Nana BTS station, which is a five-minute walk away (one transfer).

Rooms

Split personality rooms: some renovated, others outdated

The 760 rooms here fall sharply into two categories: renovated and outdated. In the dated rooms, guests should expect dark brown laminate accents, moldy grout, and maybe even the occasional roach. The Tower Wing of the hotel holds the renovated rooms including the Privilege suites, which feature a separate sitting area, large work desk with ergonomic chair, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and updated bathrooms with square ceramic sinks and walk-in showers. All rooms have stocked minibars, electric kettles with coffee and tea, hairdryers, and safes. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but can be inconsistent.

Features

Pool and spa for a fee, Climax club in the basement, several dining options, and free Wi-Fi

This huge hotel actually has a long list of features. There's a modest fitness club which in addition to holding classes, also has a hot tub, sauna, and steam room. There's a fitness room with a wood parquet floor, drop ceilings, and a handball court. The outdoor pool is quite large, and it's surrounded by lounge chairs and palm trees. Bird enthusiasts will want to stop into the outdoor aviary, that's home to several species of birds. Several dining options include a Chinese restaurant, an international buffet, and a few smaller cafes and lounges throughout the property. Climax Club in the hotel basement is a hopping nightlife spot popular with the expat crowd. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but can be inconsistent.
