Bottom Line

Centre Point Pratunam is an upper mid-range, high-rise hotel with 266 rooms over 30 floors. It has a brilliant location for shopping in Bangkok, as it is within walking distance of Pratunam Market and Platinum Mall. There's a massage center across the street, as well a 7-Eleven to the right of the hotel entrance. The hotel has large, modern rooms that all have the added perk of kitchenettes, but the bathrooms could do with a bit of an update. There's also a spacious outdoor pool and gym on-site, and neither gets crowded. In fact, the lack of a scene is what deters some guests from coming back. But, overall the Centre Point Pratunam is a convenient pick -- particularly for those on longer stays who may appreciate the self-sufficiency of an apartment-style room.

Oyster Hotel Review

Centre Point Hotel Pratunam

Scene

Subdued and casual, the hotel doesn't have many "hot spots" -- so most guests venture to local bars and restaurants for entertainment.

There isn't too much going on at this hotel, likely because it is located in a business district near shopping. Further up the road is where the party can be found; most of the nightlife areas appear in small pockets, with some of the new and more hip venues making an appearance around Thonglor, at the eastern end of New Petchburi Road. Therefore, most guests head out to do their drinking and dining elsewhere, especially because the hotel has just a small restaurant and lobby lounge. The lobby lounge is about the only spot you'll catch people hanging out, although guests can relax in the open air terrace, where there are huge wicker sofas with squishy cushions which are perfect for getting your lounge lizard on, whilst being surrounded by gurgling pools. The huge, chic swimming pool outside gets a few folks as well.

Location

Walking distance to the Platinum Mall, and Pratunam Market is a short bus ride away

The hotel is in a brilliant location if guests want to engage in some serious retail therapy. Pratunam Market, one of the major markets in Bangkok that sells clothes, shoes, and fashion accessories at wholesale prices, is about 10 minutes away on the bus. Handily, the Platinum Mall is only two blocks away and a further stroll will take guests to the Central World and Zen shopping mall, near the famous Erawan shrine.

Turning right from the front entrance of the hotel brings guests back to the back street leading to the Pratunam Market. It's a minutes' walk from Shibuya mall, where international food chains like McDonalds and Starbucks are located, and there are plenty of convenience stores, street food, and all else one could need almost at the doorstep.

If guests want to explore further afield, it's a 10-minute walk to the Rachathewi BTS sky train station, and Siam Square is a longer 15-minute stroll. A cheap taxi ride will take guests to the Emerald Buddah, King's Palace, China Town and the Khao San Road district, which has great street food, restaurants, and street shopping.

Rooms

Large and airy with hardwood or tiled floors

All of the rooms at the Centre Point are spacious suites with hardwood floors and attractive decor with slight Asian influences. Even the entry-level Premier Suites have kitchenettes with cooking facilities, microwave ovens, large refrigerators, and pots, pans, and utensils, along with dining areas, sofas, tables, large televisions, and bathrooms with bathtubs. The bathrooms, however, are a bit dark and dingy and could use a makeover, especially the white cupboards which are chipped in places. Other amenities include ironing boards, safes, and DVD players. All rooms are spacious, and the only drawback with them is the lack of terraces of balconies. Rooms have views of Baiyoke Tower, the Pratunam Shopping Area, and Central World, and the corner rooms are more dated than the others.

Features

Colorful children's playroom and a tranquil pool -- but the only restaurant is small

The hotel has a decent outdoor pool that is tranquil and gets good sun for most of the day, and a charming pagoda that houses a bubbling whirlpool underneath. There is also a rather small fitness center, but it has both weight-training and cardio machines, as well as free weights. For food and drink, there is only the small Blue Spices restaurant, although it seems that most guests here head over to the lively streets to eat from the street hawkers whose delicious smelling food wafts seductively into the lobby. A colorful children's playroom will keep toddlers amused for an hour or two. Business travelers will be pleased with the two meeting rooms which are bright and airy.
