Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half pearl Hotel Solo Sukhumvit 2 is a compact city hotel located down a quiet dead end street, that's a long walk up to bustling Sukhumvit Road's endless selection of restaurants, bars, and access to the sky train. The majority of the hotel rooms are fairly compact, but bright, and have coffee- and tea-making facilities, rain showers, and free Wi-Fi. Features include a free tuk tuk shuttle, a small rooftop pool and bar, and a small restaurant in the lobby for charged breakfast. Compared to the competition, the prices are decent here, making it a quiet and comfortable place to sleep and swim for a few nights.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Solo Sukhumvit 2

Scene

Quiet spot with only a happening breakfast niche, otherwise guests are gone for the day

As the hotel has few extra features, there isn't much of a scene here. Most guests go out exploring after breakfast, and since this isn't a resort, the hotel is just a quiet spot to hang one's hat after a day of being a tourist. The lobby restaurant Sala di Solo is the most happening place in the hotel, bustling until just after 10 a.m. After this, the only other place you'll find guests is at the small rooftop pool and bar. Since this is a lower budget value hotel, there isn't any dress code here, and you won't find too many families either, as there is only one suite room large enough for bigger groups.

Location

Way down a quiet side street that dead ends, yet near Sukhumvit Road with nightlife, restaurants, and public transport

The hotel is located at the end of Soi 2, a quiet side street that dead ends, so there isn't much traffic or noise. It is a long walk up to Sukhumvit, the major artery, so the hotel provides a free tuk tuk shuttle up to the corner. There isn't too much around the hotel in the way of shops, but Sukhumvit has hundreds of restaurants, bars, and access to the sky train for transport across Bangkok. At night, this area of town becomes a throbbing red light district and can be rather seedy, although Soi 2 is immune from all the hustle.

Rooms

Bright and compact rooms with writing desks, rain showers, and free WiFi

This is a compact hotel with under 50 rooms. While there is a Suite room and five Deluxe rooms, the majority of the rooms are Superior. These are cozy, but not overly small, and feature plenty of light, bright colors, and extras like small cushioned benches and writing desks. Coffee- and tea-making facilities, flat-screen televisions, minibars, and free WiFi are standard. Peekaboo bathrooms have rain showers and blinds for privacy. There are large closets stocked with hairdryers, bathrobes, slippers, and safes. While there aren't really any views, the windows are large enough to let plenty of light indoors.

Features

Small rooftop swimming pool and bar -- plus breakfast buffet restaurant in lobby

The Solo Sukhumvit 2 does not have an abundance of extra features as most guests are here to explore Bangkok rather than lounge in the hotel. There is a sunny rooftop swimming pool, small, but big enough to cool off in. Adjacent to the water is Cloud 9, a small bar, with sun loungers and a spot to relax once the sun goes down. Downstairs in the lobby, the Sala di Solo restaurant is the busiest spot in the hotel. Open only for breakfast, it serves a buffet with fruit, cereal, bread, and an egg station, along with a variety of juices and tea/coffee. There are also a couple of computers in the lobby for public use and free Wi-Fi throughout.
