True to its musical moniker, this design-led property has architectural details and decor that are inspired by the improvisational nature of jazz. There are swaths of red and yellow on the outside of the building, dashes of orange and black-and-white stripes inside, and lots of geometric angles and graphic artwork. Guests gravitate to the eighth-floor rooftop deck and pool, a relaxing spot for some sun and a refreshing swim. Also on the roof are a bar and lounge, where guests can sip cocktails and take in first-rate views of the surrounding area. The vibe at the Hotel Jazz is certainly hip and playful, but not overbearingly so, and guests of all ages will enjoy a stay there.

Hotel Jazz is plopped in the middle of the Barcelona action on the Calle Pelai, two blocks (less than five minutes' walk) west of Placa de Catalunya and La Rambla. It's also one block east of the Universitat metro station. The Passeig de Gracia and its upscale shopping is three blocks northeast and the Boqueria open-air market is 10 minutes south by foot. The Picasso Museum is about a 20-minute stroll east in the Gothic Quarter. If you're coming from the airport, the hotel is about a 15-minute drive northeast.

The 108 well-designed and spacious rooms are decked out in light blond woods and laminate hardwood floors, and are done in shades of grey, beige and white. Some have jazz-inspired details, such as the photo of a saxophone player we saw. There is a solid array of amenities here, including free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars and laptop-compatible safes. Beds are comfy, but some standard rooms have two single beds pushed together. Some rooms have views of the Calle Palei or garden patio. Corner Junior Suites have sitting areas.

Situated on the eighth-floor rooftop, a decent-sized outdoor pool provides a chance for a refreshing break from the intense Catalan sun. A large wooden sun deck, umbrella-covered tables and a bar border it. It's a good spot to sip a cocktail and take in views of the city and surrounding area. The ample breakfast buffet (for a fee) includes meats, fresh fruit, pastries, baked goods, omelets and egg dishes. The stylish lobby bar serves drinks and light fare. There's no fitness center or sauna, but the hotel does have a business center with free internet.
