The Halcyon lacks the traditional feel found at most bath hotels. Rather, its style could be described as Georgian chic, with classic elements (wall paneling, tufted sofas, plaid fabrics) fused with edgy contemporary decor. Guests run the gamut from travelers in town for sightseeing to couples and friends seeking long weekend escapes, to people on work assignment. The geometric front desk, striped banquettes, bright orange chairs, and framed Hermes scarves in the lobby immediately give the property a fun and slightly quirky vibe. Weather permitting, there’s an outdoor cafe area where guests can grab a tea or coffee in the afternoons (or something a little stronger). There’s no elevator, so keep this in mind as climbing stairs will be a part of your stay at The Halcyon.

The hotel is in the heart of the city, on a busy street just down the road from the Bath train station. It’s only a few minutes' walk to some of the area's biggest attractions, including the Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa, Pulteney Bridge, and Bath Abbey. There’s no on-site parking -- though there is a paid lot nearby -- so the central location is ideal for those comfortable seeing the sights by foot.

The Halcyon has a total of 21 rooms, including seven apartments in an annexed building. The main hotel rooms are a tad on the small side, but are winningly decorated. Color schemes vary; some have calming gray and white decor, while many have headboards and bed runners in yellow, pink, or purple. The bathrooms in all the rooms are clean and spacious with cool fixtures; most only have showers but a few feature bathtubs. Rooms also include free Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers. The bedding is plush, with comfy mattresses and quality linens. Minibar snacks (for a fee) include gummy bears and cashews.

Spaces can get a little warm, especially on the lower floors, and there’s no air-conditioning. If you want a quieter room, try to snag one facing the river and plaza, as sometimes bar or street noise can be heard from other rooms. There’s also a two-night minimum stay over the weekends.

The apartments, larger in size, are a short distance from the main hotel and feature full kitchens (save for the studios, which have mini-fridges and microwaves), living areas, and dining tables. These units are fantastic for people staying in Bath for an extended period of time or families needing a little more space in which to spread out.

Circo Bar & Lounge -- named for its circular bar -- is a popular place not only for guests but also for Bath locals. The venue is chic and fun with different sections, including a signature Chesterfield leather "bed" and other varied seating configurations. Myriad cocktail options are on hand as well as light food fare, with a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays. The Halcyon also offers a free breakfast, even for those staying in apartments, but it’s mostly continental. An extra perk: Bicycles are available for guests to borrow.
