Bottom Line

The 135-room Danubius Hotel Astoria is an old-fashioned, mid-range hotel that despite its bad '80s decor, can be a good value. A grand lobby features marble inlay floors and glass chandeliers while the simple rooms have dated green or red wall-to-wall carpeting, carved wood lacquer furniture, patterned bedspreads, and standard-issue bathrooms. Most report the property to be satisfying in terms of cleanliness and comfort, and highly desirable in terms of location: the hotel sits on a very busy intersection about 15 minutes south of St Stephen’s Basilica on foot. Common complaints include threadbare carpets and dingy furniture, along with pricey drinks in the downstairs bar.

Danubius Hotel Astoria City Center

Scene

Grandiose and a little bit old fashioned hotel

The Danubius, dating to 1914, is one of the oldest hotels in Budapest. The lobby bears some resemblance to a grand performance hall, with tile inlay floors, gilded crown molding, and green marble elevator banks in addition to imitation ming vases, tufted settees, and carved wood tables. Some parts of the hotel have been renovated, though none dramatically so. The building itself is a classic example of pre-war architecture; tourists are the most frequent guests here in part because of the prime city center location. The overall atmosphere is clean and pleasant, though a bit tired and dated.

Location

At the corner of a very busy intersection, at the southern end of the center of Pest

The Danubius Hotel Astoria is situated at a busy intersection near the heart of Pest, a 15-minute walk from St Stephen’s Basilica, and practically on top of the Astoria metro station. Many historic monuments are within 20 minutes on foot, and the castle district can easily be accessed via direct bus or metro (17 minutes). There is a McDonald’s immediately next door to the hotel. The airport is 50 minutes with a single transfer from the Ferenciek station a few blocks away.

Rooms

Old fashioned rooms with tube-style TVs and slightly jarring color combinations

Carved lacquer furniture in rose and peach hues, and either deep red or dark green patterned carpeting dominate the aesthetic of these simple rooms, which feature a smattering of laminate furniture, tube-style TVs, and very little by way of decor besides the '80s-era textiles. Bathrooms are on the small side, with granite vanities and shower/tub combos; larger rooms have an additional stall shower. All rooms have a hairdryer, air-conditioning, a safe, and a stocked minibar.
