Bottom Line

Hotel Churchill is a mid-range, 32-room property with a particularly rich World War II heritage and large collection of related memorabilia. Set right in the historic center of Bayeux, its location is great for exploring the sights, while also making a good base for trips to D-Day beaches. Rooms can vary in quality, with some showing signs of age and even mustiness (all have patterned carpets and bedspreads). Rates too aren't cheap for what you get, so if you're not wowed by the hotel's history, you'll find better value at the nearby Le Lion d'Or.

Hotel Churchill

Scene

Historic Second World War hotel full of memorabilia

Named after the famous British Prime Minister, Hotel Churchill was the first hotel to reopen after the liberation of France and can count several renowned Allied leaders, such as General Patton and Winston Churchill himself, as guests. This quaint and cozy boutique has maintained much of its original pre-war feel and is decorated throughout with numerous Second World War-related photographs and souvenirs including original maps, badges, and shell cartridges. The ambience is warm and homey and the owners, Eric and Patricia Péan, are usually on hand to welcome guests and offer advice on World War II related tours and trips.
