Guests of Grand Hotel La Sonrisa arrive to a gated entrance with a palm tree-lined road, which is followed by another wrought-iron gate and lantern posts. This sets the tone for the lavish design that permeates throughout the property. Occupying an 18th-century building, the hotel aims to replicate that era's grandeur with wall-to-wall gilded decor, patterned tiles, wallpaper, and fabrics, hand-painted wooden furniture, frescoed ceilings, and chandeliers. The overall look feels gaudy and ostentatious, though many find it charming and beautifully glamorous. Walls are lined with numerous gold-framed photos of the family of owners, as well as celebrities from the many events held here -- its currently featured on the television series "My Crazy Italian Wedding". 

A big downside for when celebrations are taking place on-site are that areas such as the pool or restaurant are often closed to non-wedding guests. Additionally, late-night music and even fireworks can be a big disturbance. Travelers worried about it should inquire if weddings are taking place during their stay before booking. Otherwise, the greenery-filled grounds with lovely bougainvillea, palm trees, and fountains are peaceful and lovely, and outdoor terraces are a popular spot for espresso drinks or cocktails. There's not a ton to keep kids busy on-site aside from the pool, making this is a better pick for romancing couples. 

Overall, travelers wanting to stay in a sumptuous, historic place should be happy here. However, for an upscale, elegant property with a more subtle design, it's worth considering La Medusa Hotel & Boutique Spa. Tourists looking for a luxury property closer to Sorrento may prefer Grand Hotel Cocumella, which has impressive dining and a sea-view terrace.

This hotel is set in the small town of Sant'Antonio Abate, about a 25-minute walk (five-minute drive) from the center where there are restaurants and supermarkets. There's little, however, in the immediate vicinity, and sights require a car. Located between Naples and Sorrento, Grand Hotel La Sonrisa is about a 50-minute drive from both. Pompeii, though, is a quick 15-minute drive. It's also about a 15-minute drive from a train station for routes to Sorrento and Naples. 

The 45 rooms here are spacious -- with the exception of cramped Single Rooms -- and done in a similarly opulent, though less gilded, style as common areas. Design varies by room, but expect patterned tile floors, damask-print or sponge-effect walls in pink-purple or pale-yellow hues, hand-painted wooden furniture, and chandeliers. The look is busy and feminine, enhanced by the old-fashioned vanities. In-room amenities are sufficient, consisting of desks, minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and wardrobes. Many units also have balconies, from small and unfurnished to large terraces with dining sets and pretty mountain views. Large bathrooms have bidets and shower stalls, plus jetted tubs in many. Hairdryers, robes, slippers, and a range of toiletries are provided. 

There are no spa or fitness facilities here, but an outdoor pool is pleasant. The medium-sized pool has fountains and sculptures of dolphins and classic Greek sculptures, however, it's surrounded by a wrought-iron gate and there are no loungers. A faux-grass deck has some tables and chairs though. Note that during weddings, guests are often barred from using the pool. 

All rates include free buffet breakfasts with typical continental fare such as cereal, yogurt, and cold meats and cheeses, plus some hot items like eggs. Casual lunch items such as sandwiches, and Italian fare like pasta dishes are also available. Room service is available 24/7. Food across the board receives mixed reviews though. Off the lobby is a bar for espresso-based drinks and alcohol, and its outdoor terrace is a popular spot. There are multiple event and meeting spaces on-site, two of which have their own bars. Wedding and event services are offered. Wi-Fi and parking are both free. A heliport is available for those arriving by helicopter.
