Low-rise, white-washed buildings and terra cotta tiles define this welcoming, family-run property that's surrounded by superb gardens that are filled with flowers, palm trees, and local plants. The bright, modern lobby features white wicker furniture with orange polka dotted cushions that stand out against aqua-tiled floors. Cubist-inspired art hangs on the walls and arched doorways lead to the outdoor terrace, with potted flowers and contemporary wicker seating (not to mention stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea). There are several places to take in the view or unwind throughout, including the quaint lobby bar and the on-site restaurant, which has orange tablecloths and large arched windows plus outdoor seating space with colorful tables. Guests here are mostly couples on holiday, drawn by the value and atmosphere, plus the resort-style features like multiple pools.

The Hotel Poggio Aragosta is in the northern part of Ischia Island, on a quiet, rural hill between lively little Lacco Ameno and Casamicciola, another of Ischia's charming towns. Both towns take five to 10 minutes to reach by car. There are a few restaurants and shops down the road from the hotel, but guests would benefit greatly by having a car if they want to see the island's sights. San Francesco Beach, Negombo Thermal Park, San Montano Bay, and the Archeological Museum of Pithecusae are all within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. The sights on the eastern side of the island -- including the commercial center Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte and iconic Aragonese Castle -- are 25 to 30 minutes away by car. Castiglione Thermal Park and Citara Beach are 10 to 15 minutes away by car in opposite directions. The closest major airport is on the mainland in Naples and ferries to that city take anywhere from an hour to an hour and 40 minutes depending on the destination.

The rooms here have the feel of a family-run hotel, and while they aren't impeccably chic, they are homey, clean, and have a simple and well-kept Mediterranean style. The striking aqua ceramic tile floors do a lot to brighten guest rooms, and red-tone wood furniture with wicker panels pops against cream walls. Beds have leaf-patterned comforters, and all rooms have terraces or balconies with seating, many with splendid garden or sea views. All rooms are air-conditioned and have flat-screen TVs, minibars, desks, and safes. Wall art is spare, and consists of a single soft print over the bed. Contemporary bathrooms have chartreuse or blue tiling plus white sinks, walk-in tile showers, and toiletries.

Couples typically gather at the magnificent, rectangular rooftop pool, which is surrounded by a red tile deck with blue lounge chairs. There are stunning views to be had of the surrounding hills and the Mediterranean, and the poolside snack bar serves coffee, drinks, and sweets. The hotel also has a small outdoor thermal pool heated by the island's famous hot springs, which has excellent sea views as well. Traditional Mediterranean cuisine and the free breakfast buffet are served at the on-site restaurant, while the lounge and lobby bars serve cocktails, beer, and wine. Room service is also available. Massages, body treatments, and facials are offered at the small, on-site spa, which also has an indoor thermal pool, a green-tile steam room, and a Kneipp bath. There is a modestly outfitted fitness area as well with a handful of cardio and weight options. The hotel runs a free area shuttle and free Wi-Fi is provided. Babysitting and laundry services are available, and cribs are also available for a fee.
