Most Romantic Hotels in the Canary Islands

The glorious beaches, sleepy colonial-era villages, and wine vineyards of the Canary Islands all practically scream romance. The large and lackluster resorts that cake the coastlines, however? Not so much. Luckily, Oyster reporters found 8 hotels that are as romantic as their beautiful island homes.

Royal Garden Villas

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

Royal Garden Villas is an intimate, Indonesian-inspired hideaway for luxury and special-occasion travelers. Because of the resort's small size, there are usually around 60 to 90 guests at any given time, as opposed to the 500 to 1,000-plus guest occupancy levels of most area resorts. Here, a pin drop would be audible were it not for the tinkling fountains and the occasional murmuring of a fellow guest. All 28 villas -- not stand-alone, but secluded-feeling -- offer lavish decor and amenities and stunning lateral vistas of the sea and mountains; at night, the lights of Las Americas twinkle in the distance. Guests are typically (and understandably) content to burrow in their villas, but should they choose to venture out, they can enjoy the same hushed vibe, Asian ornamentation, and land- and seascape from the serene shared pool, which is surrounded by Balinese sunbeds. Royal Garden's restaurant has romantic decor and serves breakfast and lunch (lunch is available through room service), and the spa has a thermal circuit that's free for guests.

Lani’s Suites Deluxe

Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote

The adult-only boutique Lani’s Suites is one of the most famous hotels in Lanzarote. Its 25 upscale suites are housed in as many pristine white buildings surrounded by skinny but lush tropical gardens, and set around a quiet pool cascading towards the ocean. All suites have a sleek and often whimsical design and at least one terrace with expansive ocean views. Besides the contemporary, all-white design, rooms at Lani’s also stand out for their staggering array of top-of-the-line amenities. Instead of the standard minibar found in most other hotels, each room at Lani’s Suites offers a full bar area in the living room. Wine coolers are stocked with an excellent selection of wines from around the world, and Nespresso coffee pods, water, and tea are replenished daily free of charge. The hotel’s oceanfront restaurant is known among locals and visitors alike for its excellent international menu, and is a favorite among couples for a romantic dinner. Butlers go around the lovely heated pool several times a day with free drinks, and body treatments are offered at reasonable prices in the small poolside massage room.

RedLevel at Gran Melia Palacio de Isora

Alcala, Guia de Isora, Tenerife

RedLevel at Gran Melia Palacio De Isora is a sophisticated adult-only resort within a resort. Some of its 110 rooms have perks such as large terraces with whirlpool hot tubs or jetted tubs in the bathrooms; those with ocean views cost a bit more. There are also a few Ocean Front Garden Villas, each of which has its own private garden and a pool. All rooms feature free butler service, Nespresso coffeemakers, one free water ritual at the spa, and free ironing service for two items per day. RedLevel amenities include an exclusive fondue restaurant and a private pool with poolside concierge services (staffers go around giving out sunscreen and misting guests with water). Guests also have access to restaurants and facilities in the main resort, including a handful of fine-dining restaurants, a spa with a hydrotherapy circuit, and a lagoon-style saltwater pool spanning the length of the property.

4

Avanti Hotel Boutique (Adults Only)

Corralejo, La Oliva, Fuerteventura

Smack in the center of town, the adults-only Avanti offers a central location and a boutique vibe -- a rather rare combination in Fuerteventura. The 14-room property bumps right against the beachfront and sits a block away from the main commercial strip of northern Fuerteventura. On the downside, it lacks a pool or some of the features that travelers may expect from an upscale pearl hotel, such as a gym. But for the location and the style, Avanti is hard to beat.

5

Iberostar Grand El Mirador

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

With its unique architectural style and its almost 237,000 square feet of manicured gardens, Iberostar Grand Hotel El Mirador is unlike any other hotel in Costa Adeje. The property -- which caters to well-heeled couples -- is quiet and luxurious, with top-notch services such as free drinks by the pool, valets, and butlers, and even linen menus, a rarity in the Canary Islands. Several pale pink Moorish Revival-style buildings house 120 rooms (upscale suites with canopy beds, walk-in closets, and natural stone bathrooms), which makes the property intimate by Tenerife standards. Around the serene, 10,800-square-foot pool is a separate neo-Roman-style building, with an airy restaurant (one of three) with billowy curtains and a round veranda overlooking the pool and the ocean.

La Isla Y El Mar Hotel Boutique

Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote

Known for its striking design, La Isla y El Mar is one of Lanzarote’s top hotels. The luxury property's 81 stylish suites are equipped with an array of high-end amenities, such as Nespresso machines and premium minibars, and many have panoramic ocean views from their terraces. The pools are small but lovely, with jets, plush loungers, and a peaceful atmosphere, while the poolside bar keeps drinks flowing until the evening. The buffet eatery offers a varied, tasty spread, but the standout is the a la carte restaurant, housed in a sophisticated space with an outdoor lounge offering stunning ocean views. Body treatments and salon services are available at the spa, and freebies include breakfast and Wi-Fi.

7

Bohemia Suites & Spa

Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

The Bohemia Suites & Spa is a sophisticated vacation oasis with attention paid to every detail, from the beds with pillow-top mattresses and eye-catching bedspreads to the freshwater pool with underwater music. The adult-only boutique hotel is all about relaxation and luxury, and this is especially clear in the stunning El Siam Spa, with exotic furniture, orchids, lotus flowers, red silk hangings, rose petals in the stone pedicure tubs, and outdoor lounge areas. Free breakfast is served cooked to order in the rooftop restaurant; reservations are required for dinner in the a la carte Restaurant 360, where sunsets are spectacular.

8

Gold By Marina

Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

The four-pearl Gold by Marina is an adult-only hotel located a 10-minute walk from Playa Ingles in one direction, and the Yumbo shopping mall in the other. The hotel’s decor is hip and gorgeous -- think bright, modern, and effortlessly cool, with splashes of color everywhere you look. The 133 rooms are serene in contrast to downstairs, outfitted in white and turquoise furnishings, well-equipped kitchenettes, and furnished terraces. Guests rave about the buffet breakfast (fee), and other meals can be ordered at the restaurant or pool bar. Two outdoor pools, a massage and wellness treatment area, and tiny gym round out the amenities.
