This enormous shimmering slab of glass and steel resembles a modern office block or 21st-century airport terminal more than a luxury hotel. Stepping inside it is no less sleek and contemporary -- a vast lobby space is illuminated by rows of ceiling spotlights and a long back-lit reception desk is reflected in black tiled floors. A huge colorful rug (designed by South African artist Julia Swanepoel) brings a much-needed splash of color and warmth to the scene. The feel leans heavily towards the corporate, though clientele is comprised of a mixture of business and leisure travelers, especially couples drawn to the hotel's central location and promise of specular views from its 19th floor.

The hotel is located on the northern edge of Cape Town's city center and just a few blocks from the fashionable De Waterkant district. There are shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance, while the bustling tourist hub of the V&A Waterfront is a five-minute drive away (the hotel provides a free shuttle service). The Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC) is just adjacent to the hotel making it especially convenient for those in town for a conference, while the main train terminal is 10 minutes away on foot. Cape Town International Airport is under 20 minutes away by car without traffic -- the hotel can arrange transfers (for a fee).

The hotel has a grand total of 483 rooms, most of which have an inviting, contemporary vibe with simple modern furnishings -- though some pieces feel a little Ikea-like for a high-end hotel. Bathrooms are equally adequate and nicely finished -- with
tropical shower heads and free drinking water. In-room Wi-Fi is first-class and beds are particularly comfortable. Higher-level rooms also feature some of the most spectacular views of Table Mountain and Table Bay you'll find in Cape Town.

The 19th floor Heavenly Spa is certainly a hotel highlight offering a range of treatments together with an indoor, heated lap pool, hot tub, and large sauna all offering those spectacular vistas -- the only gripe is there's little room for more than two in the pool at once. The hotel offers an impressive selection of eating and drinking options, from chic fine dining to French-style brasserie and even a sushi bar. Wi-Fi coverage and speed is excellent throughout the hotel and free
of charge, while the hotel also offers a free shuttle to the V&A Waterfront every half an hour.
