Apostolata Island Resort & Spa

From the outside, Apostolata Island Resort & Spa looks much like other hotels in the area, with an earthy terra-cotta exterior, tiled roofing, natural stone walls and accents, and wooden pergolas throughout. Guests walk through a somewhat grand entrance -- the entryway is beneath a tall exposed wood beam portico with a large decorative sculpture hanging overhead. Unfortunately, while the large lobby is bright from floor-to-ceiling windows that provide stunning views of the sea and surrounding area, it's packed with dated furniture in an array of clashing colors. Rooms are more contemporary, but generic and underwhelming. Although the large outdoor pool and pretty terraces are stunning, the hotel doesn't live up to its advertised five-star rating. Still, it's a good option for couples seeking a quiet, secluded getaway and aren't expecting luxury features. 

Set back and up a bit from the coastline, the hotel has an amazing view of the Ionian Sea. There's access to what's advertised as a beach, though it's really an elevated platform with loungers for sunbathing, flanked by rocky cliffs. Those seeking a true sandy beach can drive seven minutes to Skala Beach. Also near here is Skala proper, which has loads of restaurants, bars, and shops. As there's next to nothing in the immediate surrounds, aside from other hotels, most guests will need to drive or take some form of transportation when not eating meals on-site. The hotel runs a free bus service to both Skala and Poros. Cephalonia International Airport is about an hour away by car.

There are six different room types available, all of which are aesthetically similar but have some varying features -- some suites include a private pool. Guest rooms, in general, are generic and underwhelming, with chain-like wood furniture, bland beige and blue color palettes, and linens that look a bit cheap. Fortunately, they're spacious, have sitting areas, and all come with furnished outdoor spaces -- many of which have lovely sea views. Also standard are desks, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and wardrobes with slippers and bathrobes. On the downside, no kettles are provided and safes require a fee. Bathrooms are modern and upscale, with bathtubs and separate showers, hairdryers, and free toiletries. Note that glass windows looks right into the guest rooms, but sliding wooden doors can used for privacy. 

Outdoor features are a big draw at the hotel, especially with the sea views from most areas. Hotel restaurants offer alfresco dining, too, so guests can take in the view while they dine and relax. The main buffet restaurant, a la carte Mediterranean eatery, and poolside snack bar all receive positive reviews. However, for those on the all-inclusive package, be aware that brand-name liquor is not included. The outdoor pool is stunning and large, facing the sea and lined by ample loungers and umbrellas. A charge for pool towels is a con though. A small, separate pool for kids can be found in a back corner of the pool area. Other kid-friendly amenities include a playground and tennis court. The spa is lovely and has a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and spaces for a variety of treatments. The hot tub and decently equipped gym are free to use, but the sauna and steam room require payments. Wi-Fi is free, but reportedly spotty in rooms.
