Bottom Line

Na Inn is a tiny budget hotel with just 10 rooms located in the eastern part of Chiang Mai's historic old city. It's a great base from which to explore the famed temples, plus there are lots of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby. The hotel itself is quite plain, but it offers a good value with its central location. Rooms are large and mostly clean, though worn, and have amenities like air-conditioning, refrigerators, and old tube TVs. Wi-Fi is free, as is a simple breakfast -- though it's basically just toast and coffee -- plus bikes are available for rent. Rooms at The 3 Sis hotel are a bit nicer, plus the on-site cafe serves lunch and dinner, but rates are more expensive.

Na Inn Bed & Breakfast

Scene

Small budget hotel with spare, functional interiors and limited facilities

Na Inn doesn't look like much, but it's a great value option with a convenient central location. It's easy to miss the property, as it is located in a three-story shophouse that's shared with several other guesthouses, as well as a travel agency and other businesses. The lobby is a small, functional space, with a tile floor, cream walls, a couple of chairs, and a black tufted couch. There is red fridge stocked with Cokes and water for sale, while a brochure rack provides information on excursions around Chiang Mai. A large, murky fish tank with a couple of fish swimming in its green water is here as well, though it's not exactly the most cheerful design detail. The main draw at this hotel isn't it's style, though, as most travelers simply use it as a clean base to explore the old city. Overall, it's a simple, no-frills property, but it's clean and offers a good value, with couples and small groups of friends making up the bulk of its guests.

Location

Central location in Chiang Mai's old city, close to temples, restaurants, bars, and shops

Without question the whole point of staying here is the hotel's location. It's right in the center of Chiang Mai’s historic old city, which lies inside of a moat. From the hotel, it is an easy five-minute walk to Wat Chedi Luang and 10 minutes on foot to Wat Phra Singh -- keep in mind that in the old city there are literally temples on every block, all of which merit some exploration. There are endless choices for eating, drinking, and shopping just outside the hotel's door as well, and the old city's famous Sunday market takes place at the end of the block, a three-minute walk north. While the old city area is bustling by day, it is quiet at night, and the narrow alleys here make for less traffic than in other parts of the city. Chiang Mai's official night market is about a 15-minute walk or 10-minute drive from here, passing the Tha Phae Gate along the way. The train and bus station will take 15 minutes to reach by car, while the airport is a 10-minute drive.

Rooms

Basic rooms show some signs of wear, but are large and mostly clean

There are only ten rooms at the tiny Na Inn. They are basic, aimed at budget travelers, but they do come with a few perks. The rooms are fairly large, especially for a budget hotel in the old city, and done in an off-white, dark brown, and mauve palette. There are some signs of wear and tear, including cracks in the faux wood floors or scuffs on the tile floors, plus nicked furniture and sagging couches. Old tube TVs don't do much to perk things up, and there's nothing in the way of wall art. There are no safes or tea/coffee facilities, but seven of the ten rooms have full-size refrigerators, and the other three have mini-fridges. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with free Wi-Fi and free breakfast. All rooms also have balconies, but they are small, unfurnished, and most of them have fencing around them, giving them a cage-like feel. Bathrooms are small, with gas heating units on the walls for the small showers, which are separated from the toilets by shower curtains (though some rooms we saw lacked curtains, meaning the entire bathroom gets wet). It's worth noting that we did see some dirty grout in bathrooms. Toiletries are limited to wall-mounted shampoo and soap dispensers. Family Rooms with bunk beds are available.
