Bottom Line

The Copenhagen Star Hotel is a casual mid-range property whose best feature is its prime location three minutes from the city's Central Station. Its 134 rooms, with plain and mostly neutral interiors, have large windows and urban views. The breakfast buffet is served for a fee either indoors or in a central courtyard. The hotel's in-house burger restaurant is popular and the bar is bright with floor-to-ceiling windows. Bicycle rentals are available. Downsides include uneven housekeeping and slow Wi-Fi, which is free throughout the property. For a similar property, travelers might try the more stylish, midcentury modern Hotel Alexandra.

Scene

Historic exteriors and modern interiors with a casual and friendly atmosphere

The Copenhagen Star Hotel has a casual, friendly atmosphere with a budget hotel vibe at non-budget prices. Located on a stark, treeless street in a historical masonry building, the hotel is convenient, above all. Its simple lobby, with bleached wood floors, a metal-trimmed reception desk, and dark leather tufted sofas with polka dot pillows aims for a mid-range, modern look, but vending machines, bike rental signs, and a drop ceiling lend the air of a student hostel. The attractive restaurant features black and steel modern chairs and glossy wood pedestal tables. There are large arched windows to the street and a gray and black area rug. A courtyard located off the restaurant has woven seats with cushions and torch lighting. There's a bright bar with views to the street. The hotel, with its single to five-person rooms, attracts a range of guests, from young couples to families, traveling for business and pleasure.

Rooms

Simple rooms with big windows, urban views, and inexpensive decor

Rooms at the Copenhagen Star are adequately sized and bright thanks to large windows and urban views. The decor is unexceptional and a bit dated with dark patterned carpets, black bedskirts, and honey wood trim on headboards and furniture. Colorful abstract art hangs above some of the beds. There are molded plastic, modern chairs paired with work desks. The rooms range in size from singles with twin beds in a narrow space to five-person rooms with steel-frame, dormitory-style bunk beds, similar to what's found in hostels. Rooms have flat-screen TVs and free coffee- and tea-making facilities. Wi-Fi is free, but past guests have complained that it's extremely slow. The bathrooms have white, square tiles, wall-mounted dispensers of toiletries, and old-fashioned hairdryers. Stall showers have black-and-white curtains, some of them printed with a jumble of fonts spelling "H2O," "soap," and other bathing words. Some of the bathrooms have large windows with interesting views. Past guests have complained about noise, lax housekeeping, and a lack of electrical outlets.

Features

Free Wi-Fi and a well-regarded burger restaurant

The Copenhagen Star has the standard amenities of a three-pearl property with the added plus of a well-reviewed burger restaurant. There's free Wi-Fi, although guests complain that it's too slow. The lobby has vending machines for snacks and drinks and a public computer for guests' use. Staff will also help with fax and copy needs. There are bikes to rent from the reception area. In addition to serving burgers, the hotel serves a breakfast buffet for a fee that includes Danish breads and cold cuts. The hotel also has a bar. Its courtyard is a popular spot to eat or have a drink, especially in the evening under torch-style lights. Laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee. There is parking nearby for a fee, but none on-site. The property is handicapped accessible, and pets are welcome.
