Bottom Line

With plenty of palm trees and colorful
flowers decorating its lawns, the grounds at Anissa Beach Hotel are lovely. The
all-inclusive, mid-range resort has a sandy beach area with umbrellas and
loungers as well as a large outdoor pool area with a children’s pool. There’s
also a spa with a free indoor pool and an animation team organizing tournaments
and activities, but overall facilities are a bit run-down. There isn’t any Greek food on the hotel’s dinner buffet, but
guests can dine at the on-site Greek tavern once a week. There’s not much
within walking distance of the hotel, but it's still a suitable option for
those looking for a relaxing beach holiday on a budget.****

Scene

Plenty of places for families to relax

The pretty grounds at the Anissa provide a
perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors, with blue lounge chairs
popping up all over the place. There’s also a cabana where guests can
receive outdoor massages. Tables with bright blue wooden chairs are set up to
imitate a kafeneion, or cafe, where traditionally men in Crete go to drink
coffee. The pool area is large, with palm trees dotting its perimeter and a bar
where guests can order cocktails and beer. Down at the beach, changing booths
and showers allow for an easy transition. Inside, the hotel has a spa with a
big, heated indoor pool area so guests can enjoy a swim even when there’s
inclement weather. Overall, the property is a bit worn, but at least it makes for a laid-back atmosphere.****

Location

On the beach, near a small village and historical sights

The hotel is located on the coast in
Anissaras on a beach that stretches to the small village of Analipsi. There
isn’t much to do within walking distance, but the lively resort area of
Hersonissos is within a 10-minute drive. The party mecca of Malia can be
reached in 20 minutes by car, and several historical sights, including the
Palace of Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, are within an hour’s
drive. It’s also about a 30-minute drive to Heraklion International Airport.****

Rooms

Plain rooms with small, tube-style TVs; ocean-view balconies available

Ocean-themed
photos, colorful paintings, and striped curtains brighten up otherwise plain
white guest rooms with basic wooden furnishings and blue bedding. Spaces have
tiled floors and small tube-style TVs. All guest units also have mini-fridges,
which are stocked daily in Superior rooms with soda, beer, and water. Some
rooms have balconies that overlook the beautiful grounds and sea beyond. ****

Features

Sandy beach, two big pools, and buffet dining as part of all-inclusive rates

The
hotel has a sandy beach with free use of lounge chairs and umbrellas for
guests. There’s also an indoor pool at the spa, where guests can arrange
massages, facials, and scrubs for a fee. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets
are provided, and food-lovers can dine at an open-air taverna once a
week. The Anissa has a chic lobby bar, pool bar, and garden bar as well. There’s an
animation team that regularly organizes tournaments and activities, and a kids' club with a playground provides additional entertainment. Evening
shows are presented in the outdoor amphitheater. The hotel also has tennis
courts (that are a bit dilapidated), air hockey, foosball, and billiards. Meeting rooms are available as is an Internet corner with three computer terminals.
