Built in 1882 to mimic a 19th-century English manor house, the property served as the English Embassy for a time. Today, it offers 49 rooms and common areas decorated in a classical style, which may be too traditional for some. The striking exterior, with its grand central staircase, water feature, and large landscaped courtyard, immediately sets a historical tone. Ample red velvet, gold accents, and chandeliers in the lobby lounge add character, and walking into the hotel feels like a step back in time. Being surrounded on all sides by gardens guarantees a quiet night, and views of the sea are available from most areas. Mainly couples stay here due to the elegant and romantic design. 

Halepa Hotel is located on the far east end of Chania’s main seaside road, among residential apartment buildings. There isn’t much in terms of dining or shopping in the immediate area, but the pretty waterfront is just a two-minute walk, and a basic beach (no sunbeds) with a natural, enclosed saltwater pool frequented by locals is a 10-minute walk away. It’s a 20-minute walk to Chania, with its charming old town and historic Old Venetian Harbour. The popular city of Rethymnon is a 70-minute drive east. Chania International Airport is just a 15-minute drive, while Heraklion Airport is two hours away by car. 

All 49 rooms of have classically elegant decor with romantic touches such as sheer canopies, coffered ceilings, and antique-style furniture. Most rooms are done in a neutral or peach-tone palette, but some have deep-red fabrics. Standard amenities include minibars, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Guests are also provided with a special smartphone that provides unlimited local and international calls to a handful of countries around the world, local information, and free 4G service to use while out touring. Bathrooms vary, but most have classic marble tiling and either showers or shower/tub combos. Toiletries and wall-mounted hairdryers are provided. There are no balconies, but most rooms have at least partial sea views.

Superior Rooms are located in the Superior Wing, and are equipped with USB outlets, LAN internet connections, and smart TV’s to suit business travelers. They also have extra perks such as tea- and coffee-making facilities and one free flask of a local spirit. Suites are larger and have sitting areas.

Facilities are basic at this simple city hotel, although adequate for an enjoyable stay. The spacious rooftop terrace is popular for its small hot tub, sunbeds, and shaded seating. Drinks and snacks can be ordered from the lobby bar, and the terrace has lovely views of Chania and the sea. The charming, peaceful front garden is another guest favorite, especially for the free breakfast, which has a decent variety and includes hot dishes, authentic Greek yogurt, and local honey. Wellness amenities include a small gym with a handful of cardio and weight-training equipment, plus a small sauna. Massage treatments are available with advanced booking. A first-floor library is a charming, old-fashioned space which can also be used for small conferences or meetings. Laptops or iPads can be provided for free on request. The hotel has free Wi-Fi throughout, and free private parking.
