Bottom Line

The 2017-renovated, 312-room Remisens Hotel Epidaurus is a sleek three-pearl property located just off a pebble beach and a seven-minute drive from Dubrovnik Airport. It brings modern Scandi style to its beachside location, with modern grays, bright pops of color, and clean lines dominating the design scheme. There's a lot on offer at the property, though some of it (windsurfing and diving lessons) comes at an extra charge. For those keen to explore, it's a 20-minute coastal walk into Cavtat and a 40-minute ferry ride to Dubrovnik. Though most guests are couples, kids can keep occupied with entertainment, a playground, and shallow pool next to the main one. Note that some rooms and bathrooms are small. Those wanting a more romantic spot could look into the beachfront Hotel Cavtat, which is also set in the center of the town.

Remisens Hotel Epidaurus

Scene

Sleek property renovated in 2017 with mellow vibe

The hotel was taken over by the Remisens brand and totally refurbished in 2017 with lots of modern Scandi inspiration. Beginning in the lobby, the decor scheme is quirkily stylish, with gray tones interrupted by bright pops of color and softened by light-woods. Furniture is long and low, with minimalist lines and fixtures. Although most guests are couples, the hotel caters toward families with free cribs and cots for those under 7, plus play areas and entertainment for little ones. The atmosphere is generally pretty quiet, which might disappoint those looking for late nights. The lobby bar, for example, only serves until midnight (though it's fairly busy until then). Nearby Cavtat has some good bars though, and it's within walking distance.

Location

Less than a 10-minutes drive from airport, and well-positioned for day trips to Dubrovnik

The hotel is located directly off to the public Tiha Cove beach, which has crystal-clear water. (It's pebbly, so water shoes are recommended.) Surrounding the hotel are a cluster of holiday apartments, and the sister property, Hotel Albatros (with its spa and gym) is a seven-minute walk away. It's a five-minute drive or a long but pleasant walk (about 20 minutes) along a shaded coastal path into Cavtat's old town, which dates back to medieval times and has a good range of restaurants and bars. It's about a 25-minute drive or 40-minute ferry journey into Dubrovnik, and there's also a bus stop near the property to take guests there. Dubrovnik Airport is about a seven-minute car ride from the hotel.

Rooms

Rooms are stylish and modern, but views vary wildly.

The hotel is a large one, with 312 rooms all carrying the Scandi design theme of gray carpets, stylish wood-paneled walls, and pops of cobalt blue in the art, bedding, and accent walls. Views vary wildly from room to room, with some having no view at all -- it's worth the money to pay for a superior sea view room for the outlook across the sea, though don't expect many other differences between superior and lower-caliber rooms. Additionally, some rooms are quite compact, as are bathrooms.

Rooms each come with a safe, flat-screen TV, and empty mini-fridges, though they can be stocked by staff on request for an additional charge. Pillow menus are also available, which is a nice touch for a three-pearl hotel. Bathrooms are done in cool grays and have limited counter and storage space. Each comes with a hairdryer (though it's not the most powerful), and robes and slippers are available on request. Guests won't find tubs here, as each bathroom has a small stall-style shower.

Guests should know that air-conditioning is only on from the start of June through mid-September, and it's set by the hotel. Elevators are also available.

Features

Pleasant ocean-view outdoor pools, but food and drinks get mixed reviews.

The hotel has two serene ocean-view outdoor swimming pools, in addition to the smaller one for kids. Sun loungers and umbrellas at the pools and the public beach are available for free depending on availability. The hotel also has a bar down at the beach. Towels for the pool and beach are available for a deposit.

All-inclusive packages are available, which gets guests Croatian buffet meals, drinks at meals (local alcohol and soft drinks are used) for free until late, and an afternoon snack. The local wine and beer is generally pretty good, but food gets mixed reviews and some say the menu is too repetitive. The restaurant does themed dinners on Tuesdays and Thursdays, along with a Dalmatian-themed dinner on Wednesdays complete with a cappella singers. There's also dance shows in the evenings, which are met with lukewarm reception.

An animation team sets up activities like bocce ball, ping pong, and beach volleyball during the day. Other sports, like diving, paddleboats, tennis, and waterskiing, are available for an extra charge, and guests can take lessons at the on-site PADI-certified diving school for a fee.

There's no gym or spa on-site, but a spa is offering massage treatments and a sauna (fee) is at the company's Hotel Albatros next door. The sister property has a gym that Epidaurus guests can use as well, though it requires a fee to use.

Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the property. Sixty parking spaces are available on-site, plus 150 more nearby.
