Bottom Line

Two-pearl Hotel Bayahibe is in central Bayahibe, a five-minute walk (or less) from the town’s shops, happening restaurants, and waterfront bars. The 25 identically bright rooms have surprisingly decent amenities including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges, though the look is dated and bathrooms need an update. The small balconies attached to some even provide limited sea views. Beyond the reasonably pleasant rooms, however, this simple property doesn't offer much in the way of socializing or activities (there's no pool, restaurant, or bar). A free breakfast at a nearby restaurant is included, adding a little value to a stay here. For a bit more money, Cabana Elke has a more lively vibe plus a sparkling outdoor pool and an open-air Italian restaurant/bar that’s always buzzing with locals.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Bayahibe

Scene

Tiny, spartan property with a great location but no social vibe

In a word, Hotel Bayahibe is unpretentious, with decor that’s simple, dated, and functional. Chunky, dark wood furniture, vaguely tropical artwork, and thick layers of peeling pastel paint all make common areas look a little downmarket, though rooms themselves are quite pleasant. As the hotel has no restaurant, bar, pool, or any real social space at all, you'll need to head off property to find anything to do. Fortunately, the hotel’s central location translates to easy access to the area’s beach, marina, and numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. The two double beds in every room ensure that guests are an even mix of families and couples traveling together, and it's a fine budget bet for anyone wanting a basic place to bed down near the Caribbean Sea on the cheap.

Location

In the heart of Bayahibe, near shops, restaurants, and the sea

The hotel is situated in the center of the bustling tourist town of Bayahibe on the Caribbean Sea. A handful of tchotchke shops and plenty of tour guides are just outside the hotel, eagerly looking to win over travelers. A bit farther afield are dozens of small, local stores, restaurants, and bars -- many with water views. Several ATMs and convenience stores are also within a short walk. Five minutes away on foot is a lovely beach and a small marina where tiny boats are available to ferry tourists to Isla Saona for day trips and dive or snorkel excursions. The island's largest airport, Las Americas International (SDQ), is 90 minutes away by car via a mostly modern highway. Given the Dominican Republic’s notoriously bad traffic and drivers, the ride isn’t for the faint of heart. Taxis and shuttle buses are often cheaper and safer than renting a car. Romana International Airport is closer (less than 20 minutes away) and more convenient, however, flight options are more limited.

Rooms

Basic and bright, with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and balconies with optional sea views

Rooms are bright, mostly clean, and minimally decorated. Beige wicker and rattan furniture and pastel floral patterns aren't exactly modern, but manage to create a pleasant, almost homey vibe. The 25 Standard Rooms are nearly identical, with a studio-style layout that includes two double beds and a small balcony (some with water views). Given the hotel’s spartan nature, the rooms feel relatively well appointed, and standard features include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs with satellite service, and air-conditioning. Free Wi-Fi is also available, but we found the service to be spotty. Bathrooms are likewise dated, with obvious maintenance issues like stained drop ceilings, slow-draining tubs, and tarnished fixtures in need of an update. Shower/tub combinations and generic body wash and shampoo are standard. Bayahibe isn't a quiet place, and given the hotel's central location you will hear some area noise in rooms.

Features

Free Wi-Fi and hot breakfast off-site, but not much else

Features are few at this budget hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but the service is hit or miss. Parking is limited to the narrow, adjacent street and finding a space can be difficult especially in high season. The hotel’s website touts the waterfront Restaurant Dona Clara as part of the property, however, it’s located down the street and only loosely affiliated with the hotel. A free hot breakfast is provided daily on that restaurant’s open-air veranda.
