Bottom Line

The Hotel Stari Grad is a cozy three-pearl inn on a narrow pedestrianized street in Dubrovnik's charming Old Town. The eight guest rooms are spread over four floors, and a rooftop restaurant on the fifth floor provides gorgeous views of the walled city. The elegantly decorated rooms are clean and comfortable, and bathrooms have spacious showers and L'Occitane toiletries. A continental breakfast is included in room rates, and there's a restaurant and a lobby lounge bar, but not much else in terms of amenities. Note that street noise can be a nuisance, and fourth floor rooms are located underneath the noisy kitchen and restaurant. The Pucic Palace is also located in the Old Town and has more of an Old World ambience.

Scene

Small inn with a boutique-like atmosphere

This small boutique hotel occupies the former home of a 16th-century nobleman, located on a narrow Old Town lane. The front desk is located in a snug corner of the lobby and is furnished simply, with a white desk and two armchairs upholstered in green velour. The rest of the lobby area is taken up by the hotel's lounge bar, with large canvases of abstract art decorating the walls. A few tables make up a narrow patio right outside the front door, part of the hotel's on-site restaurant and bar. Note that the four-story building does not have an elevator and the only way to reach the hotel from nearby Pile Gate is on foot. Seniors, and those who have difficulty with stairs, should request a room on a lower level. Most of the guests staying here are vacationing couples.

Location

In the heart of Dubrovnik's Old Town

Hotel Stari Grad is located in the heart of Dubrovnik's walled Old Town (Stari Grad), a three-minute walk from Pile Gate (one of Old Town's main entrances), and just off the Stradun, the picturesque main thoroughfare. The entire Old Town is open to pedestrian traffic only, which means the hotel can only be accessed on foot. This may be a challenge for guests traveling with heavy luggage. All the attractions of the Old Town are within easy walking distance, including the Stradun, the city walls, the Cathedral, St Blaise's church, and the Franciscan Monastery, as well as the beach. There are also many cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops right outside the hotel. Taxis, public buses, and an airport shuttle can be caught from Pile Gate.

  • One-minute walk to Stradun
  • One-minute walk to Walls of Dubrovnik main entrance
  • One-minute walk to Franciscan Monastery
  • Three-minute walk to Pile Gate
  • Three-minute walk to Church of St Blaise
  • Three-minute walk to Onofrio's Fountain
  • Five-minute walk to Dubrovnik Cathedral
  • Six-minute walk to Fort Lovrijenac
  • Seven-minute walk to Dubrovnik Cable Car
  • 10-minute walk to Banje Beach
  • 10-minute drive to Dubrovnik Port from Pile Gate
  • 26-minute drive to Dubrovnik Airport from Pile Gate

Rooms

Tasteful guest rooms decorated in a simple and elegant style

The eight guest rooms at Hotel Stari Grad are clean, comfortably spacious, and decorated in a tastefully elegant style. High ceilings give an impression of space and light, and the floors are covered in wood laminate. The monochromatic color palette is made up of tones of navy, beige, and black, with navy blue bed covers, soft beige curtains, and black furniture. Abstract art adorns the walls, and elegant lamps on both sides of the beds provide soft mood lighting.

All the guest rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes, but don't have coffee- or tea-making facilities. The modern bathrooms are fitted with spacious walk-in showers and rectangular vessel sinks, and include L'Occitane toiletries and hairdryers. Though the windows have double panes and shutters, street noise can still be a nuisance for some guests. The fourth-floor rooms enjoy views of the Old Town, but can be particularly noisy as they are located directly under the rooftop kitchen and restaurant.

Features

Rooftop restaurant, free breakfast, lounge bar, and free hotel-wide Wi-Fi

Unlike most tiny hotels, Hotel Stari Grad offers a couple of features beyond the standard free Wi-Fi. Above 5 -- the hotel's restaurant -- is located on the fifth-floor rooftop and offers stunning views of the rooftops and narrow streets of the Old Town. This is where the free continental-style breakfast, which includes made-to-order eggs, is served each morning. There are only a few tables available at lunch and dinner, and they therefore need to be reserved in advance. Note that the restaurant closes during rainy weather. Green & Purple is the hotel's cafe and bar, with seating next to the lobby area and on the patio just outside the entrance. The hotel also offers a luggage transportation service that can be booked in advance.
