The Ring Hotel – Relais & Chateaux

The hotel was built in 1860, and its exterior retains something of its original grandeur, but apart from a vintage wrought-iron elevator, the inside is sleek and modern, with little trace of its bygone elegance. A book with the signatures and photos of young famous guests sits in a glass case at the entrance, and this boutique works to make sure its guests don't mistake it for its stuffier nearby neighbors. The windowless lobby makes an impression with copious mirrors and wood paneling, but some might find it not that inviting.

Located on the circular road that surrounds Vienna's innermost district, the hotel is near numerous cafes, museums, and restaurants. It's walking distance to nearly all of the city center's attractions, including the Vienna State Opera, and Ringstrassen Galerien's upscale shopping. Kohlmarkt Street, home to brands like Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, is also less than a 15-minute walk away. The U-Bahn station at Karlsplatz is three blocks away, making for easy access to other parts of the city. Expect a 25-30-minute drive to Vienna International Airport.

The 68 rooms and suites, with cream-colored walls and dark-wood furniture, have a warm earth-tone palette that's heavy on green accents. They're modern, but not especially trendy, with a sophisticated, elegant feel. Ornate gold lamps and wall sconces add a touch of glitz, but not much else differentiates the decor. The modern bathrooms have heated floors, lighted vanities, two sinks, shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads, and toiletries. Toilets and bidets are in separate room from the sink. Stocked mini-fridges, minibars, and coffee/espresso machines (by Austria's own Julius Meinl) come standard in every room, along with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.  

The hotel's At Eight restaurant practices what it describes as "aroma cuisine" -- international fare that incorporates herbs and oils with sauces that are designed to stimulate the senses -- and serves it up alongside views of Vienna's Ringstrasse. After breakfast, the chairs and lighting are changed to adapt to the evening mood. The well-stocked wine cellar leaves no dish without a good pairing, and guests can even venture into the wine cellar for tastings. There's also a cocktail bar that has a wide selection of vodkas. The full-service spa has a small steam room and sauna with windows overlooking the city. The fitness center has state-of-the-art treadmills and cardio machines. Business amenities are slim, with just a single computer and printer relegated to a quiet corner of the lobby.
