Hotel Galvez & Spa a Wyndham Grand Hotel

Built in 1911, this lovely historic property -- made modern by the Wyndham chain -- joins numerous other hotels along Seawall Boulevard, across the street from the beach. Unlike many of its neighbors, however, Hotel Galvez caters to couples. Instead of kid-specific features like a kids' club or outdoor activities, this resort is home to a beautiful spa as well as an upscale restaurant and a peaceful pool scene. Even the lobby sets the stage for elegant tranquility with high, wood-beamed ceilings, white wicker furniture, and gilded accents. The well-manicured grounds are popular venues for weddings and special occasions.

Like many hotels in the area, Hotel Galvez calls Seawall Boulevard its home, and sits across the street from the sand. While walking along the busy road isn't always recommended, the hotel is just a short drive from numerous restaurants and attractions, such as Fort Crockett Seawall Park, The Strand Historic District, and Moody Gardens. It's less than a 15-minute drive to Scholes International Airport at Galveston, and about an hour and fifteen minutes to George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The 224 rooms at the Galvez have couples in mind. Simple, upscale decor includes plush white bedding, olive-colored velvet settees, and sepia-toned photography prints on the walls. Rooms aren't particularly spacious (those at the four-pearl San Luis Resort are larger, as are the condo-style units at the Holiday Inn Club Vacations) and bathrooms in particular are small, with just little counter space and standup showers in most. All bathrooms, however, come with robes and makeup mirrors. Standard amenities include large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have ocean views.

For many couples, the quiet pool scene here is a welcome change from the splashing, tot-filled pools of neighboring resorts. Surrounded by vine-covered columns, the large, winding pool feels like an oasis and guests come here to lounge on comfy recliners, sip cocktails at the swim-up bar (or order them from poolside attendants), and soak in the whirlpool. The spa also features an outdoor whirlpool, as well as large, earth-toned treatment rooms and communal relaxation spaces. Adjacent to the spa is a medium-sized fitness center with modern weight-training and cardio machines (with personal TVs) and free weights.

For dining, the hotel has a popular seafood grill that also serves classic American dishes as well as a breakfast buffet and a Sunday champagne brunch. The Galvez is a popular choice for weddings in the area and guests can hold ceremonies and receptions on the grounds or in the event spaces. The hotel also has several meeting rooms and a business center.
