The Hotel Riu Palmeras curves around its lovely pool, the hotel's centerpiece and social nexus. Large enough to feel uncrowded, with a palm tree-shaded island in the middle, the pool is surrounded by sun beds, beach umbrellas, and an adorable pool bar serving snacks, soft drinks, and cocktails.

The lobby offers several areas where guests can hang out, including a cozy library in a corner, furnished with inviting wicker furniture, ample pillows, and Oriental rugs. The lobby bar has plenty of seats and lots of pretty wood detail, a big flat-screen TV, and great garden views. While a playground and game room appeal to kids, this resort largely attracts budget-minded couples seeking a romantic, all-inclusive experience.

The immediate area around the Hotel Riu Palmeras is filled with hotels under construction or renovation, and a few seedier businesses: strip clubs, massage parlors, and the like. The Kasbah and Yumbo Shopping Centers are nearby, and the beach is a few minutes' walk away. Once at the beach, guests can stroll the promenade to the Maspalomas Dunes and other beautiful beaches, including a clothing-optional one. For golfers, there are two 18-hole golf courses a short drive away. A rental car is necessary for guests who want to explore the island in greater depth, but most guests don't leave the property.

Rooms at the Hotel Riu Palmeras are basic, but spotlessly clean. The decor is dated; picture bare walls and a lack of colorful accents. Bedrooms are done in relaxed peach tones, with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and large bathrooms with plenty of counter space. The toiletry selection is limited; towels are thin and rough; and hair dryers are old-fashioned. There is no free Wi-Fi in guest rooms, but there are flat-screens, good storage, and mini-fridges, and the private balconies have lovely pool and ocean views. Suites are furnished somewhat formally, with dark wood, wing chairs, and Oriental carpets, which clashes a bit with the hotel’s beachy vibe.

The Hotel Riu Palmeras has a sun-drenched tennis court, fitness center, and a huge pool with room to swim without dodging fellow guests. There are enough sunbeds to go around, and a cute pool bar sits beside it for a break in the shade with a beer or a burger. Kids can take advantage of activities in the kids' club, while adults can order up a massage (for a fee) or read a book under a beach umbrella. There is a ladies' fashion boutique in the lobby that sells bathing suits, jewelry, and more. The evening entertainment happens outdoors, and includes live music and dancing.

The buffet restaurant has nice place settings, flowers on the tables, and attentive waitstaff, but dinner is offered in two seatings, with assigned tables; first-seating guests may feel rushed to finish so the dining room can be reset. The upside is that the mad rush and lines inherent in an all-inclusive situation are avoided. (Long pants are required for men at dinner.) Sir William, the a la carte restaurant, serves dinner only, and reservations are required.
